Remster 30 #1 June 12, 2002 OK, i know I know,. I should have backed up....but...I installed a 2nd HD a few weeks ago, and just ran Nortan AV yesterday (I usually only relly on the auto protect). And when i ran it this time, it said it found an error on the boot sector. and stupid me OKed the repair.... here's the log file:Date: 11/06/99, Time: 16:14:46, Remi Aguila on OEMCOMPUTERThe master boot record of hard drive #0 has changed since inoculation. The master boot record was repaired.(disregard the date, I cheated...)When I rebooted this AM, my D drive (the new one I uinstalled) is gone....... problem is all my docs, files, ppt were on there.... HELP!The new drive is still auto-detected on the BIOS, but the only way I know how to get Windows (98 by the way) to re-recognize it is to re-install the drivers through the HW SW, and the install procedure from the manufacturer (fujisu) includes a format....Any tips? please? I'll buy the beer.....RemsterMuff
SkydiveMonkey 0 #2 June 12, 2002 Not too sure on this one, but if you can't get it sorted, a computer shop will be able to sort it, if not, they should be able to pull the data off it so you can re-format. Trouble is that costs jump tickets. Have you tried using Partition Magic or other such software? Wynona's got herself a big brown beaverand she shows it off to all her friends .... skreamer 1 #7 June 12, 2002 Install Windows on the new HDD, set the jumpers on the new HDD to master and the jumpers on the old HDD to slave. Boot up off the new HDD (with newly installed OS), copy all files and folders from old HDD then format the phuqa and install a more reliable OS and file system. Will"Look before you jump, don't die until you're dead"

wildblue 7 #9 June 12, 2002 You BIOS is detecting it, but it's not showing up as a drive within Windows, correct? If you run fdisk - does it see it as another physical drive (I'm guessing it will)?uh-oh.... is this a big drive that you had to install some disk that came with the drive in order for your computer to use it? Like "EZ-BIOS" or something horrific like that?Oh… you wanted the cheese sticks as an appetizer ??

jceman 1 #14 June 12, 2002 QuoteIt dont look good does it...Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt!Serially, there are two options that I see:1) You could send the disk to a data recovery service -- they will probably be able to get 80-99% of your data back (at a cost of about $50-100/Meg or more)2) You can format the disk using a DOS that doesn't need band-aids to recognize large drives, and just kiss your data goodbye.Either way, you will need to do the second. Just chalk it up to bad experience/judgement.Now go, and sin no more.
wildblue 7 #15 June 12, 2002 How big of a drive is it?What brand?Have you tried putting in the floppy that came with it and running "setup" or "install" from it - see if it'll let you setup the drive again without formatting.Oh… you wanted the cheese sticks as an appetizer ?? mattwhoo 0 #16 June 12, 2002 Well if Fdisk is showing the drive as having no partition then it sounds like you may be fucked. I think you basally updated the master boot record to before the drive was formatted and partitioned. The only thing I can think of doing is do a fidsk /mbr on that drive. the MBR switch is spoused to replace the master boot record but my guess is that its prob not going to work. I have only ever done it on the main boot drive and never on a second drive. Now your standard disclaimer. What i just suggested my fuck up your computer even more then when you started. So if you got nothing to loose try it. Now if it comes down to you have to repartition the drives don't use that crap shit gay ass software they send with the drive. Just fdisk the drive and format it manually. Also a word of warning if your going to use partition magic be carefull more then one time have a made changes to my drives and cause my self to have to fdisk the thing to get it back. But in this situation i don't think partition magic is going to help you at all. Im guessing that if you used ez bios your probably fucked. On a normal pc the MBR on the main drive shouldn't even give a shit about the second drive but those ez bios programs do some funky shit sometime to make it look like one drive and kinds of other crap. Hope this helps.MattProviding ingenious solutions to all of your nonexistent problems! (For a fee)

AndyMan 7 #18 June 12, 2002 Do you have a boot disk?Try booting from the boot disk, then type 'format c: /mbr'The /mbr is the critical part, it won't reformat the whole disk, it'll just rewrite the master boot record. After that, try 'sys c:', which will rewrite the system files to the disk._AmICQ: 5578907MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfeYahoo IM: ametcalf_1999

jceman 1 #22 June 12, 2002 These suggestions MIGHT work if not for the fact that he had to install the drive originally using some other add-on. That puts a monkey wrench in the works. He might be able to make the drive accessible with these params, but I doubt greatly he will be able to actuall access the data. Hope so, but seriously doubt it. Remster 30 #23 June 12, 2002 thx for you help guys, but I tried to only re-install the disk using the HD SW and it did not give me a choise of re-installing it before it started to re-format....
