Gotta love the amount of research and willingness to print anything that the media puts into things. Although the article was fairly decent, the sidebar had an interesting line...
"The gear: The basic gear for a BASE jump is an oversized parachute that often is rectangular instead of the round chute typically used in sky diving. While some sky-diving chutes are about 100 square feet wide, many BASE parachutes are about 250 feet wide. This gives the jumper more control. "
Forget about the whole 100sq. ft. and round parachute part. But can anything be X number of square feet wide?

Unfortunitely evidence is labeled public so the news has a right to the tape. I dont agree with it but the police had to turn over the tape as soon as it was labeled not homicide evidence.. I know everyone involved with the accident very well and no copies were sold. The person with the tape wont even let anyone watch it out of respect. Evidently there is a very sad beginning because lee looked into his own camera and said I'll see you on the ground. Also they took a lot of pictures on the tower before the jump. But none of those are going to be released. Lee was well loved by his friends and what happend after was his rules. Dont be mad at anyone they only did what lee wanted.

I don't know.... with the way this got passed around and played on every station in the country - in hindsight, if you were one of the other people there, would you have taken his helmet and camera?
(I am *not* second guessing the people involved, I know this couldn't have been easy, I doubt they even thought it'd get all over the place like this)

I saw it today... it's like any video of something awful -- anybody who does not know the sport or the jumper won't be too affected by it, but family, friends, and most members of the skydiving community will...
TV news is about compelling pictures, and the video IS compelling.
My thoughts go out to Skypunk, and everyone who knew him...

i say as an online commuinty we bombard the tv station with our disapproval on the showing of the video.then give them some direction on how we feel about our sports(base&skydiving)give them referal sourses to contact(IE expers in parachuting) tell these people what safty mesures are taken to ensure that no one gets hurt.
the media is supposed to be unbiased lets challenge them to it!!!!!

The press only reflects the end market for the information. If no one wants to hear about ethnic slayings in Africa, it gets printed on page 15f, if people are interested... it makes page 1a. If you don't want to read/see it... don't seek it out. Don't watch RealTV, bloopers shows etc either....
Here's a thought.... everyone wants to get skydiving in the olympics... but what happens when a skydiver goes in thats on or during the Olymics? How is the press going to handle that situation? Odds are.... the public will demand all sorts of answers on why a "world class athlete" had to die... You think this video is bad.... imagine having the coverage of an olympics on skydiving(tons of cameras, air to air coverage, anouncers, analysts) and all those cameras capture the worst possible thing.
If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will....

Man, I havent been on dz.com in a couple weeks. Been flyin my ass off, so I just heard about this this morning. I'm surprised I havent seen the vid, but dont know that I care to. I met Lee for the first time a weekend or two before memorial day- I was out at DeLand to do my recurrency jump. He introduced himself and we talked for a few minutes until I had to leave. He was a really cool guy. I was supposed to do the jump with him the next day, but plans changed and I didn't get back out there. I stopped in at DeLand on memorial day weekend to check out a rig, and saw Lee, but didn't get a chance to talk to him. I wish I had gotten to jump with him that day. Well, it was very nice meeting you Lee...blue skies forever bro.

ummmm, there already is one out there. the Nude news channel. not sure which cable system has it though.
Rhino, please watch you generalizations. My father owned a couple of newspapers, won publishing awards, and IMO was always fair and non-biased in running stories. Does the media like to sensationalize, yes *some* do, but not all.

Im not defending anyone but the tape in his camera had hundreds of base jumps on lots of incriminating evidence. Also it was the intention of everyone involved for the news not to get a copy. The officers involved proved dishonest and turned the tape over against family wishes after saying they wouldnt.
