skypunk's video

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately, the homicide detectives showed up at the dz the day Lee died. There was a video camera on the elevator at the antenna, so it was only a matter of time before they found out who else was involved. The others came forward and answered questions for the detectives. They had to turn over a copy of the video, because it was a homicide investigation and they were threatened with arrest. Then I guess the police decided it was ok to give it to the news stations.
Some or all of Lee's ashes (I'm not sure) will be spread out over Deland today. A fitting ending for a great guy.

Thats when you sit back and say "I don't know nothin!" and "Charge me with something or STFU!" Those are my two favorites......I think a law suit against the police department might be in order as well. Them selling/releasing evidence is bullshit.

Once it gets into the police hands, the media can get at it unless someone slaps a quick injunction on it (ala Dale Earnhart's autopsy photos). Somehow it becomes public domain, unfortunate as it is. Channel 13 in central florida now has the footage also -I just saw it.

This is both sad and wrong. This "news with no concept of taste" attitude is what made me leave the news business years ago.
Unfortunately, it will never stop....too many people in the world are attracted to this kind of offal.
No offense intended to our friends here on the forums -- just a general rant.

Don,
Unfortunately I have to agree with you. People just love to watch things go wrong on tv. IMHO that is why people watch car racing, real tv, the guy who gets shot on the news, car chses etc etc. Very sad, but very true.......

weid, I'm interested to know how Channel 13 is spinning it...I was down at the tunnel when all this happened, and they came out to interview Craig Girard about BASE jumping. From all indications it was going to be somewhat positive, at least from the standpoint of wanting to inform the public about what BASE is, but it sounds like this is negative press all around.
They even invited the press to come to see Craig and Neal do a "legal" BASE jump off the Skycoaster. I don't know if they did, the jump was supposed to happen Monday night.

I do not know if you guys read it, but the original article in the Orlando Sentinel (and the one that appears on the website of the Orlando Sentinel) includes a remark by a detective about the "stupidity" of those involved. What do you think of editing that here? I actually think it is valuable to let people know the attitude that the cops have about the subjects they oversee.
Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, though.

channel 13 was pretty matter of fact about it -- they were like you can clearly see the other jumper deploying his parachute, unfortunately, he [Lee] didn't deploy his in time. the video shows the exit, and the other jumper waving off, then they go on to something else. Kind of bothersome to me, but they didn't seem overly negative, just pretty monotone.

The piece they did on the local NBC news last night was actually pretty good. It wasn't really slanted in a bad way at all. It showed the other jumpers jumping off and one of them deploying. Then, it showed a bunch of fog, and right at the end if you were looking for it, you unfortunately saw the ground was pretty close.

They just played this on a Cincinnati station last night. They actually didn't do a real bad job. Although I don't think they should have played it at all, you see the fog, and right at the end you see the ground really close. They also did a pretty good "human interest" story - interviewing the people around here (Greensburg) that knew him. Yeah, they got a few things wrong, but it wasn't bad, considering.
