Not to mention I've put a bit of energy into number one of three in the weekend numbers.. lolI don't have a new canopy every week? lolI had a Xaos and sent it back.. Now I have a crossfire2.. I also bought a crossfire109 that had 250 jumps on it.. Awesome canopy!!Rhino Blue Skies .....
ChromeBoy 0 #5 June 1, 2002 Quote I also bought a crossfire109 that had 250 jumps on it.. Awesome canopy!! I know a distributor that has bought several hundred if not thousand "awesome canopies." It is when you actually jump them enough to know the differences between them that means something. It is not just I have "purchased" the latest in industry, I think a lot of us could do that too! rhino 0 #6 June 1, 2002 If you read my posts Chromie you would see I have plenty of jumps on the crossfire109.. That is what prompted me to purchase the crossfire2.. Blue Skies .....

This thing is CRISP in flight!! nice!!My search is over!!!!!!!!!! That canopy is BAD!!!!!Geeeeez.. I'm a little excited Rhino Blue Skies .....

diver123 0 #13 June 2, 2002 So what's it like flying a canopy that heavily loaded? Do things just come at you and happen super quick or what? 1.85 is super extreme and you must have advanced really quick with 300 jumps... Do you do mostly swooping or what? "pull high! It's lower than you think..."
AndyMan 7 #14 June 2, 2002 Quote So what's it like flying a canopy that heavily loaded? This is what Icarus says about this wingloading: Class 5 - Extreme1.65 to 2.00 Lbs/SqFt wing loading Not for the faint hearted. If you are one of the few people that want to fly a class 5 canopy consider every aspect of what you are doing very carefully. On the up side there is very exhilarating airspeed, quick response times and powerful maneuverability. On the down side our margin for error has reduced to almost nothing (!), compounded by the fact that if we do make an error we are almost certainly traveling at speeds that can maim. If you have or are considering a class 5 canopy we can't tell you how to fly it in this overview, we must assume you know what you are doing. Most people I watch flying class 5 canopies don't fly them to the limits of the canopy and the performance they achieve from their canopy could be achieved from a class 4 canopy flown to its limits with a far greater safety margin. These canopies generally have to be run out on landing. They must be fitted with a collapsible pilot chute. Lowering and collapsing the slider and loosening the chest strap is recommended. Canopy recovery arcs can be over 400 Ft radius. The step from a class 4 canopy to a class 5 canopy can be quite large i.e. for a 80 kg jumper with gear and weights the difference between a 105 and a 95 feels similar to the difference between a 130 and a 105.I don't think they had this canopy in mind for someone with 300 jumps, certainly not someone who did 2/3's of those under a Triathlon. But that's just my opinion._AmICQ: 5578907MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfeYahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
diver123 0 #15 June 2, 2002 2/3 's under a tri? I didn't know that... So you're saying he's only got approximately a 100 on high performance canopies and some of those are elipticals loaded at higher than 1.8???!!! Holy crap! To the pilot "rhino" be careful my friend...! I'm not judging your decisions, just reminding you to balance some safety with your fun..."pull high! It's lower than you think..." rhino 0 #16 June 3, 2002 Chromie,It goes a little fast to take pictures just yet. And considering I was racing the plane down from 14000 feet I didn't have much time.. He beat me by 500 feet only because of wind drift, I had to be carefull to make it back. I have more things to do right now, like learning all the flight characteristics than taking pictures wouldn't you agree?? I'll get some soon enough don't worry..Diver123,What is it like? There are people on here more versed and more qualified to answer that question than I am.. I can say that the response time is amazing, the speed is much greater, but you learn in progression how to look further ahead than under a normal canopy, THIS canopy turns faster and dives harder than anything I have ever jumped, equally loaded Xaos included. It kicks the hell out of a Xaos at 1.85. Really no comparison. I dove it in today from 700 feet had a LOOOONG recovery arc "made me MUCH more comfortable having all that distance to judge with. Planed out a little high say 20 feet but still had a really long surf..This canopy feels like it has it's own airspace if that makes any sense? It slices through the air crisply. It responds without ANY hesitation. Truly amazing and a dream to fly. I like having SO MUCH control over what I fly. It definitely gives me that. I can get COMPLETELY inverted over the canopy it turns so fast. Tried my damndest to induce line twists? Couldn't even come close..I was at 8k spiraling down and was told people on the ground were yelling cutaway! cutaway! It was tons of fun.. Andyman,Every pilot has different skills.. My favorite part of skydiving is landing a canopy. That is where it is for me. I have stood up everything I have jumped everytime. Even when I bounced under my Tri150 "which prompted a higher thought process and much more caution" I stood it up. Am I agressive?? I would say yes.. Do I feel I am over my head in ANY way? No I am not..Remember, when I bounced under the Tri and got my ass chewed for hooking something that has such a short recovery arc I started the transition to where I am now. Looking back? I was an idiot "like hook and others said" for hooking a Triathlon. If you have never flown a loaded high performance canopy you won't know why I am doing what I am doing until you are in my and others shoes? Hard to explain.. My last 100 jumps have been under a 110 or less.. I put a jump on a 135 and felt like kicking and screaming all the way down. I felt like I was being held back. You will have to feel it to know what I mean..Even the crossfire2, 97 at 1.85 landed me PERFECTLY straight in yesterday.. I was going to carve in but THE PLANE took the lane I was going for and I tool lz#2 and straight inned it.. Hitting the p's It isn't about how small your parachute is guys.. It is about why do you do this? My reasons are surely different than yours, Some of you enjoy head down.. The only thing I can think of going to the DZ is landing my parachute.. That's fun to me.. That is exciting, that is what I look forward to..Rhino Blue Skies .....
PhreeZone 20 #17 June 3, 2002 >I dove it in today from 700 feet had a LOOOONG recovery arc "made me MUCH more comfortable having all that distance to judge with. So... your better at visually judging the difference between a surf and a broken femer from 700 feet up, then you are at 400? Wow... I must say I'm impressed... I have a lot of problems telling the difference between being at 450 feet and 455 feet, the ability to do it with another 300 feet... wow...I've flown a few times at a 1.67 loading... it was ok, but not something that I could sink into a 10*10 foot area.. so I don't fly that canopy.any more. Besides, Its not fun to be flying a canopy that no one can bump end cells with. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will.... AndyMan 7 #22 June 5, 2002 Quote Do I feel I am over my head in ANY way? No I am not..Well, I'm glad you feel comfortable under it.Please correct me where I'm wrong.... you have roughly 300 jumps, which I understand you've done basically over 5 years. You jump at a weekend only dropzone, and if your "weekend numbers" postings are any indication, you've done about 20 jumps so far this year.Despite your low experience level and lack of currency, you think it's ok to jump a canopy at an extreme wing loading, because Derek tought you to swoop. You arogantly state that because I think your nuts, I must not understand, so therefore I must not jump a high performance canopy. Actually, I do understand, and I do jump a Stileto, loaded at 1.5, a level that has gotten me myself many "are you nuts" comments. Despite this, I have more jumps then you, are more current then you, I'm pretty sure my canopy instruction is just as good, if not better then yours.Did I miss anything? It's a wise man who learns from his own mistakes. It's an even wiser man who learns from other peoples mistakes. It's in this veign, that I'm going to raise the fact that we lost one of our own this last weekend. Tony Weber (dz username: weber) with 270 jumps died after a hard landing under his vengence 150. Don't think it can't happen to you. If you like, I can go find the thread where he said it was a great canopy, and like you, he felt perfectly confident flying it.I still think your nuts, and I worry you'll be a statistic. If you do burn in, please try to make sure I don't find out about it?_AmICQ: 5578907MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com AIM: andrewdmetcalfeYahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
