Zennie 0 #1 May 16, 2002 MAJOR SPOILERS AHEADIf you don't want to know anything about the movie, stop reading and step away from the computer. I'm off to work, but I at least wanted toget a spoiler thread going. I'll post my initial impressions a bit later. But for starters, the JarJar scenes were mercifuly short. And he didn't replace them with some other stupid cutesy character. So that was good. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense." klingeme 1 #2 May 16, 2002 What about how Yoda can handle a light saber? Now that was funny.MarkMark Klingelhoefer

Now that was funny. What was even better was after the fight sequence, he nonchalantly picks up his cane with the force and hobbles back to the group. jfields 0 #5 May 16, 2002 To bring up a silly point, I don't see how there can be much spoilage no matter what we say in this thread. Didn't Lucas pretty much guarantee that by going 4,5,6 THEN 1,2,3? Come on now! Like we think Yoda or Obi Wan will die.Not to mention, the Star Wars movies have basically sucked starting at Return of the Jedi. The ewoks spelled doom. What the hell was he thinking? I let myself get dragged to Phantom Menace and was severely dissapointed. Sadly, it seems like Lucas might be out of creativity regarding this series.I'll probably get flamed by the legions of Star Wars faithful, but I see the whole series as a long downhill slide after the first two. It isn't about art, or the story, or Jungian archtype characters. It is about the money and merchandising possibilities. Instead of buying into Lucas' "vision" by standing in line for tickets, buying paraphenalia and going to watch this at a digital movie theater, I think I'll wait for it to be shown on the cheesy basic-cable stations after reruns of Gilligan's Island or something worthwhile.Justin
BikerBabe 0 #6 May 16, 2002 No flaming here, Justin...go see Lord of the Rings, instead. I have a feeling it's MUCH MUCH better!

For example, since Lucas has pretty much stated that the first and second 3 roughly parallel in terms of the lives of Anakin & Luke, I was really expecting an "I am your father" revelation (from Palpatine/Sidious). I was kind of surprised when there wasn't.As far as your general criticism, I tend to agree with you (thus my "Star Wars Suck" thread)... until I saw this movie. I personally have noticed the marketing has been throttled way back this time around. As far as the story goes, many people may not like this one because it moves sort of slow in parts. I heard several audible sighs of boredom in the theater. But if you think of the whole rise of the Empire, it's basically a story of political intrigue. It's not really an adventure like you had with the Rebellion. So there's a lot of skulduggery & gamesmanship involved. I think that's why people are finding the latest installments confusing. As far as this movie went, it had a feel of a murder mystery in many ways. It also delved heavily into Anakin's personality, which I personally found interesting and well-presented. You really get a feel for him as a person. Someone who is basically good, but very emotional, and he can't seem to rein them in. Just when you think he's making progress, he suffers a setback. The other thing that was interesting was how Obi Wan was presented. He's so non-descript & restrained in his use of the force that, when you see Anakin doing all this wild stuff you start doubting Obi Wan's abilities as a Jedi. Then at the end he shows that he knows a lot more than he's let on all this time. Sort of like Yoda.I was really afraid this was going to be a sappyt love story. Of course there had to be some of that, because the story of how Anakin & Padme hook up needs to be told so that you know where Luke & Leia come from. I think he did a pretty good job with that, showing how the relationship develops without going overboard. So I think he's back on track again. I'm not going to rank it until I see it a couple more times, but I personally think it's way better than ROTJ or TPM.YMMV.
