Sebazz1 2 #5 May 8, 2002 I know the other Jump Master that was on the skydive. he called me yesterday to tell me he was ok. I just want to send best wishes out to all that this has affected.Altitude awareness can be lost by even the most experienced. Do what you can to protect yourself.Sebazz........ bmcd308 0 #6 May 8, 2002 Do you care to share the specifics of what you understand happened? I know it is very early, but I hope we can learn something from this such that the same thing does not happen again.BMcD...
DiveRSQ 0 #7 May 8, 2002 I don't feel its my place to give specifics of what happened as I have only heard it from others at the dz.I had the pleasure of doing my AFF lvl C1 dive with him on Saturday and he was a really great guy. He got me to relax and made some nutty faces at me. Its terrible really I have my jumps so far 3 total on video and I have him on video telling me to relax and sticking out his tongue at me. Later on that night I stuck around the DZ with my wife and he gave her a beer and started introducing her to everyone and really made us feel welcome. Then to my horror I hear on Monday that he went in. Damn, on that Saturday night my wife and I were joking about the days events and how crazy and fun these people were, his name came up more then once and I mentioned how I looked forward to being friends with them and now he's gone, I have only been married for 9 mths last August on 8-11 and I have been having a hard time figuring out if the "rush" is worth the possible loss. Yes I know that you can be killed going across the street and all and I'm not making any decisions this week about skydiving but must say that its a wake up call. Especially since I'm only on jump 3. Deleted 0 #9 May 8, 2002 As usual, u can't really tell what happend from the reports. But to all the JM's out there, or those who want to become JM's: When I was new in this game I was in a situation where a student didn't pull. It is one of the hardest fucking things to control; that desire, that duty to go in there and save their ass as they fall looking at their knees through 2K. When you brain tells u that you are about to watch someone die. I was lucky, I pulled at 2 and the student (SL 30sec delay) pulled shortly there after. I know as skydivers we are all about love and taking care of each other, but we are also about responsibility. SO FUCK THEM. That's why we have AAD's, jump courses, and waivers. I have NO friends below 2K. May sound harsh, but I know several people who have broken badly by following students low (down plane, low pulls etc.) and people die. No friends below 2 guys. Trust your equipment and AAD's. Don't risk 2 or more lives when u don't have to. Even if you are not a JM....i would offer the same advice.LeFreak
jlmiracle 7 #10 May 8, 2002 my condolences to the family and friends of Robert.I agree with LeFreak. I am a AFF JM and I tell my students that at 2000' I have to save my own life and they are responsible for their's so pull at your assigned altitude. And imagine that it's a friend of yours. That almost happened to me; a very good friend of mine got knocked out in freefall doing an AFF level I. She was main side; I was reserve side on another AFF on the load. Watching the tape I knew that I would not have been able to abandon her at 2000 feet no matter how little sense that made. That's one of the reasons I try to use an AAD whenever I do AFF - to keep a bad decision I think I might make from killing me.-bill von
Deleted 0 #12 May 8, 2002 As much as murphy loves skydivng, here is a possible situatin for you, and another reason that I really hope to be able to stick to the no friends below 2 rule. I chase my buddy low (knocked out), and since all of my rigs have Cypres, at about 750ft. I get snatched.... Being a pretty good skydiver and AFF I, I would hope that I would be pretty close (maybe even docked?) by that alt.... My DZ is pretty close to the Eloy boogie numbers of over % 80Cypres.... So now there is a real good chance that we are going to have a canopy collision, or other nastyness that can occur from 2 people openning real close to each other.Murphy says both of us will die.If I would have dumped my main at 2... I'd live, and cypres would have done all it could have done (and as much or more than I could have done) for my friend. No friends below two. It's hard....it's mean....and u are going to want to break the rule.....but FORCE yourself to accept it, and don't let murphy skydive with u.
