what do they have in common??? The canopy pilots that fly them tend to get hurt or killed under these canopies due to shoddy design & manufacturing...PD Rules!!! Check out the latest article in this months Skydiving about the Xaos pilot in VA...this is starting to become really sad. Companies are starting to put out some dangerous canopies without doing the proper research, design & testing. Dont even mention the Nova...

I just call them as I see them...I dont get paid to jump PD, but from all the crap I have seen with canopies collapsing and killing & hurting people...you start to realize that its not necessarily part of the sport. You see someone die once...you may think...hey, its part of the sport...but after a while you start to see some coincidences.

Did you think that maybe it is because the canopies that you mentioned have been envogue and since there is a larger swoop population that jump them, there will be higher accident numbers too? Remember, swooping/low turns is the biggest killer in the sport right now.
Have there been actual design flaws, etc with those canopies *shrug* not my arguement, I don't jump those canopies, I just think people should look at other possibilites when starting what could end up to be a heated flame war. Either that or people will recognize the troll and move on.

i have seen some really stupid stuff under a lot of canopies, but the latest ones...i.e. the crossfire incident at the pondswooping nationals at the ranch, this newest xaos incident in VA, and having seen and known 2 people to "full on bounce" in Deland this winter (which is why Deland actually prohibited crossfires from being jumped there until they were altered by the company or a master rigger). Read this new report about the xaos...it is a very scary article....very similar to the death at the ranch. Coincidence??? Dont know...go ahead and make your choice.

I am fortunite to live in Deland where PD is located and I see all the design and testing they do. I cant tell what their testing because they dont put labels on their R&D but they jump the hell out of their designs. Then they give them to their teams to put hundreds of jumps on them and still they work out and change things. I saw the velocities being jumped a year before they were released. I cant comment on the other companies but Reputation in this sport means a lot. And buying something because its cheaper usually means that the R&D money might not have been spent.

Ummm.. That didn't say much..

I wasn't commenting one way or another on the original post. Just pointing to the online incident report (which by the way is a new URL for those of you that follow that site, it's the new DB-powered version).

NOTE - The canopies that you mentioned were all made by the same manufacturer. We have yet to hear of any substantiated reports of issues with Crossfires that were manufactured in Icarus' European facility.
You have made a general statement regarding the industry that is not necessarily reasonable. If you could detail out the design and manufacture process that PD uses and compare it side by side with that of Icarus, Aerodyne, Atair, PISA, etc., that would be a little more acceptable.
PD is a great company that makes fantastic products. They are not the only ones, though, who pour money into R&D and put out a good product.

One of the other things I really really hate about these canopies is they don't deploy for you, don't steer you back to the DZ by itself, doesn't repack by itself, I mean jeez gimme a break!! Ooops I mean don't gimme a break.........;)
I think that this thread was doomed from the get go. I am willing to bet that a majority of these accidents were human error and not equipment error.................
Thank youB|

Even if 100% equipment error, that does not make them a reasonable commentary on the entire skydiving industry.

It sounds like that Xaos could have just as easily been a tiny Vengence. The way I read it, he hit some bad turbulence. All it takes is for one side to 'collapse' just for an instant, the whole thing spins, you now have line twists and a spinning main at 50 feet.
One of the dangers of flying a pocket-rocket....
But if you want to blame it on the gear, to make you feel better about what you're flying... knock yourself out.
You don't scare me! I got chunks of guys like you in my stool!!
