It has to do with their belief that they can pray for past ancestors and get them raised to a better heaven or atleast out of one of the lesser levels of hell.

so they can retro-actively get people into heaven. My aunt is mormon, and after people die, they can bring the names to their church or something during a ceremony, and the ceremony gives the dead person the chance to affirm their faith with the mormon way, thus allowing him/her into heaven. They do it for their relatives, so they can have a second chance.
