Closing pin necklace after 200 jumps?

Recommended Posts

Howdy all
I read in that Scotty Carbone story on the index page that skydivers can wear closing pin necklaces after their 200th jump. This is the first I have heard of this tradition, I thought people pretty much just bought them whenever they liked. I have also noticed loads of skydivers (non-skydiving) partners wearing necklaces.
So, what is the real deal with them - who is *supposed* to wear them and when? Anybody know when skydivers first started wearing them? A bit of background on the necklaces would be quite interesting.

Never heard of any 'requirements' for a necklace. Is this a new award? Cool, falcon, double-falcon, eagle, double-eagle, 3-d, closing pin necklace... Maybe a DZ tradition there, but I don't think anyone is going to follow you to the parking lot and beat you for wearing one under the magic 200.

Well, they may do things differently in jolly old England....:)I saw them when i showed up for my first jump, and wanted to get one, but I made myself wait until I got my A liscense.....because then i was "officially" a skydiver.
I haven't heard of any tradition concerning this either.

I did the same thing, I didn't buy one until after I had my A in my grubby little hands, cause then I was a real skydiver. Actually up until that point I had several times where I almost quit due to skydives that scared the hell out of me. (huge student rig issues)

Yeah, I waited until I was licensed before sporting any freefall gear / apparel about the place. after that, the folks at work look at it like a rattle on a snake or hourglass shape on a spider... sort of a warning that the bearer was a bit 'touched' to be leapin outta perfectly good airplanes...

LOL, actually Don, skydivers get *beat* in the parking lot at Hinton quite often....

Oh for fuxsake, stop making Hinton sound so sordid! It's a lovely place, full of happy, shiny people and beautiful flowers and pwetty cwouds fwoating on the skwy.....Grrrr. Ever since those twins cast their shadow of perversion across our tender lawns and corrupted the innocent skybunnies who call Hinton home....Pah.

Couple of years ago I was filming a tandem and on the way to altitude I noticed the tandem student was wearing a pin necklace so I said "Oh you jumped before, cool Necklace" and she looked at me weird and said "I just bought this when I was waiting my turn to jump because I really liked it" ..she lol and then asked "What is it?".. And I told her and then she said "Oh how Cool now I love it.".. So I don't think there is a requirement ...lol..

I've had about 10 people ask me if it was the "female" symbol....... you know what i mean.....the "male" symbol is the circle with the arrow sticking out of it, and the "female" symbol is the circle with the straight line running down, and the 2 lines across.....
And after I told them what it actually was, i had 2 people ask me "Well, if it opens your container, then how do you stretch it all the way around your body while you're falling ???? "
I had to laugh. :)Don

It was July. We had a go at the SCR thing, didn't make it (I was one of the 6 that got in though!). There was a father/son combo (they had the sewer video business) and some dude from Texas called Chad. Ring a bell? I can check my log book for the exact dates.

I recently converted my closing pin necklace ( have 400+ jumps) to a bracelet and put the closing pin on the laces of the my tennie shoes. I did this out of protest because, though not always, most of the people who sport them are annoying. I personally think that if you want to meet the most annoying people announce over the PA that you want to make an all closing pin necklace skydive. It's sort of like when you road a skateboard, only the real posers had matching vans and a vans t-shirt. The rest spent their money on their board, cigarettes, dime bags, and bad hair dye.
Ok.....I'm ready..bring forth the derision.
