flyinryan 0 #1 April 5, 2002 Okay, read this and let me know what your opinion is.USPA has totally disavowed BASE jumping. They will not respond to interviews for articles about BASE jumping and there are never any articles about BASE in parachutist (at least that I have seen). I think this is rediculus. ALL BASE jumpers are skydivers. BASE jumpers are a bigger sub-set of skydivers than profesional swopers. I'm not a pro swoper yet but I still enjoy reading about swoping and looking at the amazing acomplishments of those who are. So why does USPA not want to share BASE jumpers acomplishments with other skydivers? AND last time I checked USPA stood for United States PARACHUTE Association. All of my BASE jumps have involved a parachute. Now I understand some legal issues, and they don't want involvement with illegal jumps, which is fine with me, but couldn't USPA with all its members (i.e voters) help us open up some NPS BASE sites??? What do you think?
lazerq3 0 #2 April 5, 2002 Yeah I can see your rant, but it is a completly diff sport...jsut cause you can skydive doesnt mean you can BASE!! Thats a tuff question to answer!!! I see your point and I see theres,,,I dont disagree with you and that I would enjoy reading about BASE in my Parachutist but then:Quotelast time I checked USPA stood for United States PARACHUTE Association. All of my BASE jumps have involved a parachuteNHRA Drag racers use parachutes, paragliders, and hang gliders, use them too and there not in there either....(well there is a hanggliding add). I guess what I'm trying to say is I understand you complaint but its there mag and have the right to publish what they want....Isnt thee any BASE mags out there....youd think with the popularity of the sport something would come out!!!jason

billvon 3,118 #4 April 5, 2002 >USPA has totally disavowed BASE jumping. They're better than they used to be. About six years ago I circulated a petition to get USPA to accept ads for BASE equipment. Previously, they would not even accept ads for vides that had the word BASE in it. I got about 500 signatures, and they agreed to accept videos and gear ads that used the word BASE, so consider that my small contribution to the cause.>They will not respond to interviews for articles about BASE jumping and there are >never any articles about BASE in parachutist (at least that I have seen). So? There are no articles about paragliding, aerobatic pilots or bungee jumping either. Which makes sense, since Parachutist is the official publication of USPA, an organization that takes your money purely to promote and regulate skydiving. >ALL BASE jumpers are skydivers. BASE jumpers are a bigger sub-set of >skydivers than profesional swopers.Swoopers are skydivers; BASE jumpers are not.> AND last time I checked USPA stood for United States PARACHUTE >Association. Oh come on. Paragliders are ram-air canopies, and many spacecraft use parachutes. That's not an argument to include either as subject matter for Parachutist.>but couldn't USPA with all its members (i.e voters) help us open up some NPS >BASE sites??? They tried that about 20 years ago and got burned incredibly badly. USPA opened up El Cap for BASE jumping, and it got shut down a few months later. Some BASE jumpers made such a mess of things (vandalism, littering, antagonizing the NPS) that USPA distanced themselves so they weren't caught in the backlash. The BASE jumpers then sued USPA.So if you're really looking for someone to blame for the anti-BASE sentiment in USPA, blame BASE jumpers. gale 0 #5 April 5, 2002 I agree that it's great to read about BASE jumping and although I'm very new to the sport and nowhere near that level it's great to learn about it. The one thing I might say for not printing articles about it in a magazine though, is that because it is illegal and very dangerous the USPA probably doesn't want to be associated with that. By associating with such sports they may feel that it degrades the validity of parachuting as a whole. Whether I agree with this or not, it may be at least one argument against BASE articles/endorsments.A magazine just about BASE jumping is probably the best solution.GaleLife's not worth living if you can't feel alive
billvon 3,118 #6 April 5, 2002 As an aside, if you do want to read about BASE, get a subscription to Skydiving magazine. They feature BASE quite often.-bill von
