Okay - I have a really stupid question - can I engrave my name on the side of my Alti III, or will it "damage" it in any way? I know me, and I will most probably put it down somewhere and forget where - at least if there is some kind of "marking" on it, it might be returned to me....

I've got my name on the back of my FT-50. Didn't engrave it, just wrote it on with a permenant pen.
When you participate in sporting events, its not whether you win or loose, its how drunk you get.

After enough 'banana' landings your alti will have enough personalised scratches for you to tell it apart from the rest without you engraving it.

I have my name and phone number on the back of my alti. That way if I leave it lie somewhere at a DZ I might be visiting or lose it it'll get back to me hopefully.

I put my name in permanent marker along the side. I figure if I put it there instead of on the back, someone's more likely to see it if they pick it up by accident. Something else you might want to do, if you have the replaceable lens, is to take it off and put your initials somewhere on the face. Then someone is SURE to see that they've got your altimeter. I had my name and USPA number engraved on the back of my alti-III.
I took it to an engraving store at my local mall. They wouldn't gurantee the work or offer any waranty, but the engraving worked real well. No damage at all. Looks great.
