the lucky ones

Recommended Posts

Ever since I started skydiving I've felt like one of the luckiest people in the world. But it struck me especially hard tonight how incredibly lucky we all are. I mean, we can FLY! So few people out there can say that. We are among a select few who knows what it feels like to have a 180 mph breeze blow over our bodies... to connect with someone a few miles above the earth and share a smile in a piece of sky that belongs to just you... to fingerpaint with clouds, swiping your hand along the side of a cumulus cloud and smear it across the sky. God, we are so lucky.

I agree 100%....when I was a kid I dreamed of flying my body, with no airplane. I still have those dreams, but you know what, it is a little diffrent now. I can fufill those dreams. Plus I have meet some of my closest friends through skydiving. I only made one jump today because it was soooo windy, but I still had a blast at the DZ. I got pied for my 100th jump (it was late but I guess there is not statue of limitations on that stuff). On the one jump I made I jumped with some dude with almost 2000 jumps and we just did a 2 way free-fly and played around. Yeah, I suck in the air, but afterwards we just laughed and talked about how cool it was. Afterwards we all went to the bar and had some drinks (after a lot of drinking at the DZ) and we ran into another skydiver (an ex-girlfriend of mine but that is another story)...we all hung out and just talked, it was good. I just got back from the DZ and I am drunk off my ass so I may be a little sappy right now but oh well, its all good.

It's the sleep we have the night before?
It's the waking up early in excitement unlike the regular work week?
It's the drive to the dropzone?
It's the welcome by friends when we get there?
It's the dirt dive?
It's the call from manifest?
It's the gearing up?
It's the walk to the plane?
It's the jokes and talk on the way to altitude?
It's the door!
It's the JUMP?
It's the FREEFALL?
It's the CANOPY FLIGHT?
It's the friends we make?
I love it all...

It's giggling cause in just over 3 weeks you'll be walking which means you're that much closer to skydiving again....
It's watching skydiving videos over and over again and never getting sick of em...
It's skydiver with thousands of jumps conversing with us babes and not seeing us as inferior...
It's crying about the death of a fellow skydiver you never even met...
It's not having jumped for almost 9 weeks and still being every bit a skydiver!!

It's finding out you need surgery, and your question is "when can I jump again"?
(My dr just looked at me..."we've been 'round that tree, Michele", says he...)

Michele,
My doc is the same way. It was the first thing I asked - even before I asked if I could still go to the olympics. He rolled his eyes and said "Please don't break anything else!" And I also wanted to know if it wasn't gonna heal well enough to jump again cause in that case TAKE IT OFF! There are plenty of jumpers out there with prosthetic devices. I'd chose that over a non-jumpable leg any day!
It completely boggles my mind that there are people out there whol have no desire to try skydiving. I always ask "Don't you wonder what it feels like to touch a cloud?!" I can't imagine not even wanting to try. I really cannot even conceive of such a notion. I always think they are lying cause how is that possible? They will never know.......
