flyinryan 0 #1 March 26, 2002 Finnaly happened! I was in Eloy over spring break and on my 12th jump out there (91st overall) I had my first malfunction and reserve ride. The opening felt totally wrong. When I looked up the whole left side of my canopy was tangled (the right side was fine though so there is some positive to this opening). The cutaway went like clock work, I run through the cutaway prcedure like three times every time I jump so I didn't really think much...look grab cutaway, look grab reserve, pull cutaway "CHINK", pull reserve. It was a fairly low speed malfunction so I got to go back into free fall. That was weird. Canopy opened fast but hey, it opened. I held onto my handles and chased my free bag until it got to close to the runway then broke off and just watched it land. A van came out to pick us up (the two other people I was jumping with landed near me to make sure I was okay and to help me find my stuff...Thanks Joel and Jen!). One of the guys jumping with me had a camera on his head...he didn't catch the cutaway but he did get a shot of the main falling to earth...kind of weird to watch the video 'cause you can see that one side of the canopy is all tangled and it is weird to see my canopy on video without me under it.
