NASA is behind the times. I read an article about this in the WSJ months ago.

During the Manhattan Project, the original creators of the atomic bomb didn't really know if the chain reaction would dampen out, or if it would continue building and take out the entire planet. And they tried it anyway. It does make you wonder sometimes.

Give it a couple years...
After the Large Hadron Collider goes online in 2006, physicists will try to make black holes by slamming protons together. These particles are made of even smaller subparticles called quarks and gluons. If two of these "partons" collide to form a black hole, the result should be spectacular.
