For anyone who ever served in the Navy (Pics)

Recommended Posts

Dateline - 26 Oct. 1966 - Name of Ship: USS Oriskany CVS-34. Location: South China Sea, Gulf of Tonkin, Yankee Station. Lives lost: 44. This is exactly why a warplane is not allowed to land after a combat sortie with live ordinance. I know first hand. See attachment. This is the cover of Life Magazine and not something that was made up.

Viking,
No, that is a 1000 lb bomb..and I witnessed and have newspapers to this day, describing 19 year old sailors singlehandedly rolling 500 and 1000 lb bombs, Zuni rockets, Sidewinder missiles, and melted A-4 Skyhawks and UH-1 choppers over the side. I was in the middle of the blood, the tears, the screams of the wounded and the silence of the dead. I lost 44 good people from 7:15 a.m that morning to 3:20 p.m. that afternoon. I've been to the Wall in D.C. and traced the names of the dead. In spite of the fact that there are cameras on the flight deck, and there are, no US warbird is allowed to land, with live ordinance, on the moving deck of a Carrier at sea. Want more? I can send you copies of the original newspaper clippings from the front page of the Atlanta Journal/Constitution that tells the story. 44 brave MEN died that day, protecting the right of every American Citizen to vocalize their opinions, such as the some of the "brave souls" in BillVon's thread about fear and the War on Terrorism. These were people I lived with, sleep beside, shared food with, and worked with every day for more days than I want to remember. Unfortunately, I can't forget. Sometimes I close my eyes at night and see the faces of these warriors. And I will not participate in a thread that denegrates the memory of these men.

Viking,
I got a distinct feeling that we are gonna' get drunk at some point in time...lol. Here is another shot, taken from one of the ships that was on the scene at the time of the fire. Pardon the smallness of the pic. It was taken from a long way away.

Triple F,
Was McCain on the Oriskany? Or was he the one who "started" the "Forrestfire?"
BTW, Viking's pic looked like the F18 took an OK-3 wire. Does it count?? And is that the FIRST time you've seen an AIM9 bolter? :)Shark

We were shown the movie of the USS Forestall. That was one of the training demos about using proper extinguishing equipment. Damn, there is no where to go for "more help" on a boat.
:::OK, Canopy is Open, No Traffic Around, .. Why are these "Extra" Lines Draping Down??, Damn!

Shark,
Yeah, McCain was on the "O" boat. And yeah, he "started" the Forrestal fire, altho accidentally. He was sitting in his A-4 when a Zuni misfired from another bird that was sitting across the flight deck. It hit his belly tank and he bailed. He came on board after the Oriskany's and Forrestal's fire and was shot down while dropping ordinance over Hanoi. We never saw him after that, but yes, it was a sortie from the Oriskany he was flying when he got hit. No, it isn't the first time I've seen a bolter, but it is the first time I've seen an AIM bolter. The AIM wasn't in use when I was in. That pic didn't look like it was a misfire but more like a bolter. Since the Oriskany fire, I've been under the impression that no bird, under any circumstances, was to recover with live ordinance. Am I wrong in this? I've carried that belief for 30 years. BTW,I couldn't tell whether that was a 2 or a 3 wire trap.

FFF....As far as I know they land with them on because of the cost associated with missles these days. An AMRAAM is about 1 million dollars. Plus...they go a hell of a long way. Kinda hard to just fire it off at nothing...:)I did have a live 2.75 rocket fall out of a launcher on a MH-60 (US Army Helo...lotsa guns on it). I was controlling him onto a dumpster about 150 Yds away. He was offset about 50 yds and the rocket landed about 60 yds from where I was standing. Luckily it stayed pointed down range. I kept picturing that thing lighting off ...it never did....

Can anyone translate TripleF and Shark for me? I'm fascinated by flying in general and naval aviation especially, but some of this is over my head. I know what the 3 wire is, but I can't tell from that picture which one the pilot got. And a bolter is when a naval aviator misses all 4 arrestor cables and has to go around, right? Why would an AIM-9 discharging on a bolter not be called a misfire?
As a side note, I worked for McCain's presidential campaign in SC from Sept. 99 to Feb of 2000. I have the utmost respect for him. He's one of the few politicians who seems willing to tell it like it is (well, as much as a US Senator can) and actually lead the fight on big issues. Even beyond his style, I agree with a lot of his politics. And on top of that, even though he still has scars and impairments from his years as a POW (you'll never see him raise his arms above his shoulders; they were broken/dislocated and never allowed to properly heal) he has an amazing perspective on it - he characterized his shootdown as "valiantly intercepting a surface-to-air-missle with my aircraft." One of the very few role models left in American politics.

Doesn't appear that it fired....it just plain fell off. The armament guys didn't do their job properly. I watched an entire rack of Hellfire missles fall off an AH-64 Apache once because of static electricity. Also saw Aim 9 fire off into a revetment due to the same thing. Shit happens all the time....it usually doesn't make the news.
