but can't a legal guardian sign the waiver? I'm interested more because I have some friends who want to take their 16 yr old on a tandem. Sorta like a family outing

Well I'm no expert (sorry, lazerq3 ;)), legal that is, but I imagine even the government won't give you the legal right to sign away the legal rights of a minor.

Well, I have to put my .02 worth in on this one. A waiver is like a contract. A minor can rescind a contract unless it's for necessities. In this case, even if the minor were to sign the waiver...it would be technically ineffective and unenforceable.
For that matter, even with adults, if the dropzone were to do something negligent or intentional that would cause harm to someone, yes...a person can still sue regardless of the waiver.
What you "think" you cannot do ...you CAN if you "think" about it ;)

that wasn't the point I was trying to make Terri. I realize that a 16 year old's sig doesn't neccessarily make it a valid contract, but what if her parent signed the waiver ? I guess it doesn't really matter since it's up to the DZ as to whether they would even take up a 16 yr old.
I did hear that pretty much anyone can go in Mexico tho....
Make up your own ending, let me know just how you feel....

I have 2 boys 9 and 10 years old. They love the drop zone. My oldest is trying to learn to pack ( he wants to make money) and my youngest thought he was going to get to jump 4 years ago when my best friend took him on a plane ride. they have watched me jump several tmies and can't wait to do it. Their Grandmother on the other hand doesn't think it's such a hot idea.

Ok,,
I see what ya'll are saying,, but parents sign waivers all the time,, ie for surgery, to go for a school trip on a bus on the hwy with no seatbelts,, and we all know waivers are 6 pgs of bullshit anyway,, easily disregarded by a good lawyer,, I don't even read them anymore, just tell me where to sign ok,,, so would I sue anybody because my daughter gets hurt in a skydive? Hell no,, If I don't trust the people she's gonna jump with I wouldn't let her up in the first place,, She's old enough ta know the risks involved, she drive's a friggin car every day an that scares me!! She's old enough ta get pregnant an that scares me even more!! And yet she can do an AFF jump but not a tandem, which she wants to do for her first jump, and I feel more comfortable with anyway,, then if she wants to go AFF,, cool!
Don't read this shit down here,, it's nonsense,,,

It's one thing to sign an informed consent for a medical procedure, quite another to sign away one's legal rights, as we do with waivers for skydiving. Legally, that is a whole other ball of wax and why a parent cannot sign a skydiving waiver in FL.
