My Latest Stunt!

Recommended Posts

I'm going to do a cool-ass stunt tomorrow...
jump out with a rig in my arms(arms routed through the leg straps)
Of course i'll be wearing another rig, but the video footage of me looking up at a rig with canopy opened and nobody in it will be priceless!!
Anyone else have any good ideas for stunts?? Done any good ones lately??

Holding an empty rig stable at pull time is going to be hard enoughand with all probility.... the opening shock will either break your arms or cause sever pain.
If you got the idea from Greg Gasson's "Rig-less jumps" you might want to know he was jumping a modified Spectre to give him a much longer and softer opening then most normal Spectres.
If you do decide to try it..... Just remember to turn the CYPRES on and call 911 before you take off.....

Greg Gasson isn't the inspiration actually...
I am helping make a first jump course training video and this will be the "this is what happens if you don't fasten your chest strap" part of the video...
If any student is EVER able to forget that image, i'll kiss your ass!

In terms of falling out of your rig, you will be upside down and gone before you realize it if your chest strap is undone and you fall forward. The best the video can hope to protray is holding on to a rig after deployment.
What does your S&TA think about this stunt? Have you talked to all the AFF-I's and experienced jumpers you can about this before you try it? There might be some knowledge in one of their heads that could save a broken bone or two.
BTW, have you condsidered how far a rig could drift with a .09:1 wing loading? Whats your recovery method for the rig?

I shared dinner and drinks with my S&TA last night...he thinks the rig will be fine with that light loading. As far as injuries go, I don't think that a slow opening right off the step will hurt my arms, as long as i pack the rig for a slow opening. The video shot is for the "un-initiated" among us...I realize that you would be gone before the image was witnessed in real life, but students would most definately get the message, don't you think??

Personally, I think students get that message without the dramatics... it seems to me that you are doing this for personal satisfaction, not for the benefit of any students... but of course, I could be wrong! Just be careful...

Three of my siblings went to Murray. My grandparents lived in Paducah. I lived in Marion, IL. My sister married a guy from there. I was inspired to skydive by watching a four way team skydive into the football stadium while the horse (I forgot it's name) ran around the track.
As for your stunt...just enjoy the skydive man. No reason to prove anything.

As someone who is not far off student status, yes, we get the message without the dramatics. Thinking back, if I saw the video at the time of my AFF-1, I would have thought that the position you demonstrate is the exact position I will go into if I forgot to do up the chest strap.
When you are there in the FJC, you are paying so much attention, and taking everything literally. You can only rely on what your instructor says, as you have nothing to really compare it to. So if my instructor told me that the sky would be orange, I likely would have believed him. As it was, I got fixated on where the snakes lived, and not wanting to land on them (go figure).
And no, I am not gullible, but in that situation, I will take the "expert's" word on it because I cannot make any real assessments based on experience - I hadn't any experience yet. And not much more now! LOL....
If you are doing it to demonstrate what will happen when a chest strap is not fastened, then keep it as true and accurate as you can.
If you're doing it for shits and grins, I suppose my "I wish you wouldn't" will make no difference. But please post ASAP so we know you're o.k. *Disclaimer: I am not YOUR mother. I just sound like it on the 'net*....:)Ciels and Pinks-

...the horse's name is "dunker"! :)
Murray State now has a skydiving club, "Racer Relativity"
The jump is for a new student video, but it is also going to be a blast! I appreciate everyone's concern about the jump. This is a cool community we have here.

i'm going to ask you to do me a personal favor, but in the end, you'll do whatever your going to do. but consider the impression of "newbies" in our sport, if they see you do this successfully, how long before they want to try it? i don't even know you, but we just lost one "brother" today, so reconsider.

Richard,
Not sure what to say about the newbies...they'll do what they are allowed to, and nothing more...at least that's at my DZ. Your words of caution are good to hear and i will be extra careful. Just keep in mind that this isn't a spur of the moment thing, but a planned jump that will result in great video and a great experience for me as well.

The stunt went well and there weren't any "newbies" out there to give a bad impression to. Bad news, however, is that after i let go of the rig (thankfully an OLD one used for water jumps), it stayed inflated and flew MILES off the DZ...The canopy was olive green and we have yet to see it...DOOH! Expensive stunt(+/-$400), but what an AWESOME video shot!! Everyone at the dz,(including me) was very surprised that I held on to it during and after deployment. Oh well, guess i will scale down my jumping until i can replace their old rig!

p.s. thanks all for your concerns and advice
