How do you decide when something is just plain selfish, or whether your own needs should come first - even if it means hurting the ones close to you?

When you take more than you give. That is selfish.
If in giving you take more 'damage' than the issue is worth then fuckit, tend to your own needs.

Your other half is a non-jumper and HATES you jumping and wants you to stop.
Do you carry on cos you love it?
Stop cos you love him/her?
Now, depending on which option you choose . . . . who is the selfish one?

Personally
If a person adopts the 'blackmail' position with their partner they are not worth keeping.
Even if it is about trivial. It shows a mindset that will lead to trouble sooner or later.

My other half has over 3000 jumps, I have nearly 200 . So, we are not talking about me here!
Going back to the origional question..... It really depends on the situation!
But, you have to remember it's your life, you only get one, you may regtret not doing the things you wnat to do because of somoene else.

This is not the situation, but I would wanna keep jumping if there were ever such a situation. Why? Because I believe that when you choose to love someone - you choose to love everything about them - even if you don't understand it. For me the partner would be the selfish one....that's just my view. My situation is a little more tricky....let's just say for once I wanna do what my heart tells me without holding back for the fear of hurting someone else. Should I take the easy road and protect them, or should I tend to my needs, hurting them but potentially being happy as shit.

I'd say, do what it is you want to do.
If they hold a grudge against you or even hate you for it, then they are not the person you thought. :) If they love you they will let you/forgive you/understand.
Sounds to me like you have pretty much made your mind up.

If you don't do what you want you are going to regret it.
Ask yourself this.
How long will the other person hurt for?
How long will you regret not doing whatever it is that you want to do?

you could go with your subconsious.. i forget exactly how this works, but basically when you go to bed, think about the situation, and keep thinking about it until you fall asleep. supposedly, your brain will work on it while you sleep, and when you wake up, the first answer that pops into your head is the one you should go with.
of course, this may all be new-age type bullshit too.
