PhreeZone 20 #12 March 6, 2002 They are not Features with MS... they are "Bundled Software"And they like to include "Bundled Software" in their Service Packs to "Fix" "Potential future problems". If the Service pack includes too many "fixes" expect to pay for what they are calling "A new, rewritten OS".Anyone see that SP1 for XP is going to have like an additional 15 new features and a few new games to play too? Just when I thought I'd got the last issue with XP under control........And Linux calls its "Kernal releases" or something else just as bogus.....Cause I don't wanna come back down from this cloud... ~ Bush
rgoper 0 #13 March 6, 2002 speaking of msn............i just got off of the phone with these klowns, (after talking to 20 different people, nobody can help, i'm sure ya'll know the drill) i bought a new cpu today for my office, it's a pavillion 540n, after going through and setting up my msoffice 2000 pro, and my iomega zip, i got to looking for my restoration cd's for the machine, they weren't there. :( i'm advised that i cannot obtain them, unless in the event of a crash or another castrophe. ain't that a b**ch! that's my rant. before purchasing a new cpu, or laptop, that has win XP on it, inquire about the availability of restoration cd's!Blue Skies, Hot Days:Richard"Gravity Is My Friend"
PhreeZone 20 #14 March 6, 2002 Did you call MSN or HP? MSN and MS dont have shit to do with the computer, HP does.Dude... in terms of an OS crash... yeah your screwed, but XP has the roll back feature that actually works for application data. Try it once....And screw restore CD's they just load all that junk software, reinstall the OS clean and go from there.PS... I'm sorry you got suckered on an HP. I've had nothing but bad lick with their desktops. Thier servers suck too... but I'm a Compaq server boy so what should I/you expect? rgoper 0 #15 March 6, 2002 i miss spoke, i conversed with HP, not msn, but HP blamed msn for ther're not being able to provide the restoration cd's. i'm informed that the hd is partitioned to include restoration data, and beyound that, the hd needs replacing.....b.s.? who knows!!@@??**&&Richard"Gravity Is My Friend"

indyz 1 #17 March 7, 2002 Due to general fucked-upedness at Microsoft, no manufacturers are allowed to give out recovery media that includes the XP operating system. This, in conjuction with their somewhat draconian authentication key program, is supposed to help curb piracy. In reality, the only thing that authentication keys do is piss off people who tinker with their systems a lot. The average home user, business user, or casual software pirate will never have to worry about it, but the people who mess with their systems on a regular basis find it to be a huge pain in the ass. --BrianHomepageAIM: suprmath
Magistr8 0 #18 March 7, 2002 Hey dude your new computer more than likely has the cab files on the drive which are a cd replacement. You can do a search for files and folders for *.cab files and they should be located in the windows\system dir. If you have these then you don't need the CD. Ever!Hope that helpsWho ever said comming down from a high was bad obviously never tried this.Magistr8

Kris 0 #20 March 7, 2002 Actually, I've been running XP Pro since it came out and have had no problems. Trust me, for a Linux guy that is really hard to admit. As far as the license and registration I was lucky enough to get a corporate license copy from work (I work from home ocassionally via VPN) and I don't have to deal with that registration BS.I haven't had so much as a blue-screen yet and I run some really weird gear: Overclocked Athlon, DPT U2W caching RAID, really old but trusty SW, etc...Actually, right now I'm really pissed that SuSE Linux doesn't have v7.3 as downloadable ISO's that I can burn to install, you have to buy it or download the whole thing (complete Pro package weighs in at over 4GB). ARGH! Luckily, I think I found a friend that has a copy I can burn...Kris
PhreeZone 20 #21 March 7, 2002 Thanks Kris... I've been runnig XP since it was still called Whistler Beta 2 and its only blue screened once on me. That was with a beta copy of EZCD Creator before they came up with the XP patches. Non patched EZ and XP was flakey as anything I've seen on any platform.
