Krosfyah 0 #1 February 19, 2002 When chatting about jumping with some non jumping friends the other day, as uhhh you do from time to time :) one of them asked what happens if you hit a bird. I haven't ever heard of anyone coming into contact with a bird, but when i thought about it, i thought stranger things have happened and it might well be possible that this has happened.Anyhoo, does anyone know if this has actually happened to anyone (god forbid, for both the jumper and birds' sakes)
Slowfaller 0 #2 February 19, 2002 If Fabio can get hit by bird on a roller coaster I'm sure a skydiver has hit a bird under canopy. Freefall might be a little high for the birdies.I'll go to college; learn some big words; I'll talk real loud god damn right I'll be heard.
skymama 37 #3 February 19, 2002 Why do I have this feeling that somehow this thread will turn into something about sheep?Nope, never hit a bird, or heard of anyone doing it. But, if you want to ask about people almost hitting planes, I'm the one to ask! AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all. Slappie 9 #4 February 19, 2002 I haven't heard about bird strikes.. I'm sure they have happened. When visiting Dallas I heard of Locust strikes and bananas... That's about it...My New Website with 24hr Chat
freeflir29 0 #5 February 19, 2002 Birds aren't stupid....they move. I have witnessed a flock of geese scatter when they heard jumpers in free fall. I'd like to see someone catch a bird under canopy. I don't think it'll happen. Now occasionally Hawks and other birds will do a fly by or cruise along side you while under canopy. skymama 37 #7 February 19, 2002 Clay, that was a serious answer on the "talk back" forum. Are you feeling ok? Did you bump your head or something today? Kind of a weird, Twilight Zone thing going on there for me!AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all.
freeflir29 0 #8 February 19, 2002 "Are you feeling ok?"No...I'm stressing...Have that job interview on Thursday and the assholes haven't sent my plane tickets yet and I have many more pages of forms to fill out and....and........."I only have 133 jumps, so I don't know shit..right?"-Clay
scottbre 0 #9 February 19, 2002 This has actually been brought up on these forums before. Check this link out. http://www.skyxtreme.com/archive/july2000/safety.htmlIt's about halfway down the page. "Let the rabbits wear glasses. . . "

MarkM 0 #11 February 19, 2002 I've seen a picture of a helmet visor with a bird stuck halfway through it from a skydiver hitting it in freefall. The diver came away with a black eye. Would've been worse without the visor.
scottbre 0 #12 February 19, 2002 Beat ya to it, JumpHog. Besides mine is better anyway, cause it's clickable. "Let the rabbits wear glasses. . . "

mikefarmer 0 #15 February 19, 2002 Check the fatality pages as well. I would swear that I read about a guy being killed in Austrailia when an eagle went through his chest in freefall. Either somebody got me, or I read it somewhere. I think it would have been in 98 or 99.Missy the 225 lb. Meat Missile Sky World
freeflir29 0 #16 February 19, 2002 Thats Wacky....It had to be a "Tit Mouse" since it was involved in Skydiving right? "I only have 133 jumps, so I don't know shit..right?"-Clay

Shark 0 #21 February 19, 2002 Hmmm. I've had lots of "bug" impacts, but I think, and hope that most birds keep there flights below 2000 AGL. I've done CReW with the local Hawk before. We just didn't dock... A jumper hit the tail of a Cessna a few years ago. Took out the rear stabilizing wing (called an eleron?). The jumper lost a foot, but lived, the plane ended up going in.
