Kelly 0 #1 February 14, 2002 alright, seems like there have been a lot of heated debates on here lately... Personally, I dont particularly care for it.. There are some things (one starts with a "B") that i have gotten tired of and just dont read anymore.. I dont want the same to happen with important issues regarding gear & safety.listen, this is a great site. and a great place to debate safety/training/ freefall issues. But lets do something to diminish the arguments.when youre posting a topic and you want to refer to something as something in particular; "safe" or "fail-safe" are 2 examples, define what you mean by that. Its something we all learned at one point in life. If youre going to try to make a point you have to FIRST define the terms youre discussing. SECOND you must cite evidence of what youre discussing. the death of lisa gallagher has been sited several times recently, this is an actual event.. maybe not completely accurate b/c lisa cant tell us what happened so we must speculate, but at least its something real that is relative to the topic at hand & not just "xyz canopies are made badly.. Use some supporting evidence with your posts.. this way its easier to thread out what is 'rumor' and what is fact, whats been tried and tested, and what hasnt. so lets start by defining what we mean when we use a certain word. lets then give examples.this will let all of us play nicely http://kel197.tripod.com/skydivefriendsTRIPOD/
scottbre 0 #2 February 14, 2002 Quote Personally, I dont particularly care for it.. That's fine, but there are some people who want to try to explain what they are thinking clearly. And sadly, there are also some who just want to keep stirring things that have already settled. The biggest problem with posting threads is that there is a huge margin where things can be misinterpretted or misread. That is where a lot of the really nasty arguments come from. Just different people who may all have a valid point and just can't explain it the way they think about it, or people who just aren't capable of looking at something from an angle other than their own.But everyone is capable of using tactics such as name calling, or sarcasm, when they become frustrated with trying to articulate clearly what they are trying to say. There a huge well of information available from people who post on these posts, and it is good to have them around, even if someone who only has 28 jumps doesn't always know what they are talking about. rhino 0 #3 February 14, 2002 Very True.. When I posted the Fail Safe thread I was suprised that people didn't know what it meant? I knew what fail Safe was before I purchased my first rig.Blue Skies and Smooth Rides!!
skycat 0 #4 February 14, 2002 It seems the one thing you are missing is that a lot of us are in this sport not only for the jumping, but the socializing. That is what the Talk Back forum is all about. Talk back reminds me if sitting around the bonfire until 2-3 in the morning talking and laughing with friends. Also I don't know how many times huge debates of this or that came up. Sometimes yes there was yelling, sometimes there wasn't, but the thing is the next morning we all still liked each other and ran out to the plane. Not everyone is going to agree on this or that, what is best what is worst, but I've learned so much in the last 3 years just sitting around the bonfire. That is the same here, so you don't like a certain topic, click the next button or the back button, it's not like you are actually stuck at the bonfire forced to listen to the DZO go on once again about how great that last swoop of the day on the sunset load was. Although hearing everyone start ribbing him about it is what made it feel like family. So we are one big dysfunctional family, I wouldn't change it for the world!!!!! I sit here reading stupid posts laughing, crying, getting mad, but it feels like each and everyone of you is right here in this office with me (whether I like it or not).I mean why do people drive past big turbine DZs to go and jump at Cessna ones????? It's the people, the family. So I say debate on, sometime the most interesting things come out in debates. Ok so some people just go on and on about their product and how every other one is bad, well like I said just hit the next button.I for one will stay her laughing and learing.Kelli
Kelly 0 #5 February 14, 2002 Quote thats fine but there are some people who want to try to explain what they are thinking clearly have you read the rest of my post...? just wonderin cause i address this in the following part.... Im trying to make a point that if people State what they mean by what they say in the original post then it might eliminate a lot of the arguments.... youre right that there will be people who just want to argue.. but they cant add fuel to the fire if there aint no damn fire! not trying to start an argument here, just suggest ways to eliminate or reduce em.(in my best Mommy voice) its just cause i adore all of you guys and dont want anybody getting mad at anyone!!!!http://kel197.tripod.com/skydivefriendsTRIPOD/

Kelly 0 #7 February 14, 2002 youre dzo comment made me smile. Very true. Its like telling the teacher to 'piss off!' ya just dont do it and youre right about not reading a thread. I do that alot. I agree that some arguing is good, but you can only beat a dead horse so much.. and when the arguments are going on b/c of a fuzzy topic.. well, lets define that topic so we can discuss it, agree with it, or even disagree with the actual point of the original post (just not argue cause were talking about different things..)..so, lets argue nicely about something AFTER we agree on what it is that were discussing... is skydiving safe? define safe, then lets put up the arguments for/against it.. (i dont know if you were involved in that, its just an easy example to cite)~kel (with a 'Y' http://kel197.tripod.com/skydivefriendsTRIPOD/
LawnDart21 0 #8 February 14, 2002 Let's also not forget to mention that for better or for worse, skydiving is a very ego-intensive sport. We push limits most people couldn't fathom up there, so we (all of us to some extent) have a little "skygod" in us. With that said, most people in general don't like being told their wrong, add the skydiving mentality to that, and of course there is gonna be conflict. To be honest, I like the arguements a bit though, because sometimes they really get to the heart of some issues without the candy coating. Everyone here (myself included) tends to post "politically correct" threads at first, and it's only when things heat up that the gloves come off and the important messages/information come out. That's my .02 on the topic."I live to EFS"Tom
