kingbunky 3 #32 February 10, 2002 okay, here's the format for the all new olympic skydiving event. we have to include as many disciplines as possible to be fair to everyone. to start, everyone bails from 15k and has 15 seconds to do a freefly routine. after the time expires, everyone on the load has to hook up for some rw. breakoff and dump at about 7k, then reform for some crew points. land on an accuracy tuffet, chug a beer and for the final manouver, you have to run into the stands and talk a complete stranger into showing her boobies. (female competitors would have to talk a non-inebriated male into hanging a rat for the cameras).waddya think? kingbunky 3 #34 February 11, 2002 not a chance in the actual olympics for sure. i guess i needed to put in a j/k at the end there, sometimes humour (such as it is) doesn't travel well electronically. skymedic 0 #35 February 11, 2002 Very true...although I would love to see airspeed or magik in the olympics I am a realist......our sport just doesn't have a chance against competitve underwater basketweaving.......and you know they would take that over us........marc"...a mind stretched with new idea's will never regain its shape"
AggieDave 6 #36 February 11, 2002 Hey, Curling is in the Olympics...so anything can get in. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.
kingbunky 3 #37 February 11, 2002 i think from a realistic point of view, the main problem with skydiving is that to see it, you have to be doing it. watching on tv does not convey the speed everything happens at or the skill involved. most whuffo types figure it's just gravity, any idiot can fall.i mean, crap, there was a (i swear i'm not making this up) show on today where guys were riding their dirt bikes down a ski hill, over a jump and doing these really cool moves in the air and then landing them. if that can have a tv show, but skydiving is so rare, it has to be because skydiving is a participation sport, not an observation sport. to hell with them, we'll just keep it all to ourselves... but the olympic boogie idea may have some merit."Jumping out of planes for the thrill of it all."-J.Geils Band
skymedic 0 #38 February 11, 2002 That is exactly what I am saying.....people can somehow understand a sport like curling(which I have played) much better than they ever will be able to understand the inexplicable feeling of freefall...and how truly skilled those world champs are.......now I do have a feeling that Airspeed is going down this coming year.....marc"...a mind stretched with new idea's will never regain its shape"

Remster 30 #41 February 11, 2002 There's a very good reason why skydiving will probably never make it in the olympics... there is too high of a chance of someone dying in it.... yes, downhill skying is dangerous too, but just look at the swooping death lat year where the canopy collapsed on landing... I dont think the IOC will ever want to run that risk... after all, the only thing they care about is ratings.... (fo heaven sakes, chess is trying to get in! do we really need to be in the olympics hat bad if chess gets in???)PS: I'm not saying chess is evil, but come on, its a game, not a sport, and if the IOC is actually considering letting it in, then I for one feel no strong desire topush inclusion of skydiving in that media event.RemsterMuff

riggerrob 643 #46 February 12, 2002 Back in 1987 I predicted that para-gliding would make it to the Olympics before skydiving. Now I am modifying my prediction to state that foot/ski-launched blade running wil make it to the Olympics before skydiving. The tough part will be convincing the Bulgarian competitor to take a spill everytime the crowd yawns. PhreeZone 20 #47 February 12, 2002 QuoteWe could show the world a thing or two about boobies and beer as well !! One of the quotes that stuck with me from this Olymics so far is from one of the Suiss Snowboarders...."We are mainly here for the babes and the beers...."
