aprwvu 0 #1 May 20, 2014 I'm thinking about sewing a U.S. Flag patch on my container, just below the 3-rings. It's a common place for embroidery. According to U.S. Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8(j) (No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations.) I am not military. Is this, in any way, disrespectful? Not really because of "disrespect" but because it shows ones ignorance of proper display. In this day and age where you can simply google anything and have an answer within 20 seconds, there is no excuse. Andy9o8 2 #5 May 20, 2014 US flag patches are worn on athletic uniforms (and/or helmets, warmups, etc.) fairly frequently. Google it and you'll see lots and lots of examples. As long as it's done tastefully and respectfully, it seems to be acceptable. FWIW, the US Code section you (correctly) cite is merely a suggested guideline, for the sake of both respect and uniformity. Otherwise, it carries no mandatory weight of law. When I was growing up, the rule was you didn't use the American Flag as a decoration. Now it used for underwear and a towel to be draped over a runners shoulder when they win a race. That depends a lot on your point of view. The "Flag Etiquette" rules are pretty clear. You are in the military, I'm going to assume you are familiar with them. But what is listed as "proper" and what is acceptable has changed over the years. It used to be that wearing it as decoration on clothing (not a properly displayed patch) was not ok. Abbie Hoffman took flak for wearing his "Flag Shirt" at the Viet Nam protest in Washington DC, but there was an almost identical shirt worn by a serving General who led the "Rolling Thunder" motorcycle ride a few years back.
