Viplo color mod

Recommended Posts

So I recently bought a used Alti-2 as my first altimeter and was stoked. I knew it was a bit "worn" to say the least so I googled around to see if anyone had any information on fixing it or changing the color but nothing. Alas I decided to take the plunge and do it myself.

Gotta say not too displeased with the results. I would love to hear what you all think.

P.S. Just in case it wasn't obvious, the aluminum finish was the original.

I would never change a safety related skydive item, like altimeters, rigs, canopys and so on.

Sewing a patch on a suit or putting some stickers on a helmet, ok, but never manipulate anything which saves your life.

Are you sure there are no holes which are now covered with paint?

Just my opinion.

And that is the reason why knowing what was done maybe is important.

Back in the days people chrome plated hardware on rigs and problems occurred. Knowing what was occurring led to advice.

People not familiar with the mechanics of the device can then provide additional thoughts on the process which may not have been considered by the original poster.

As you said the holes are crucial to an altimeter and any modification should be verified prior to use.

I appreciate the concern and suggestions and thought about that as I painted the alti. I noticed the holes you are referring to but they are on the actual "core" if you will and not on the outer casing itself I also did not paint the inside of the housing or the core itself.

I also made sure to look at it carefully prior to painting just to be triple sure that no holes were covered but you are both certainly right in that you can never be too sure that's why I planned on jumping with a stock alti from my DZ which I know works as the primary while I test this one out to make sure it works.

The work done was simply using plasti dip to change the color from the aluminum stock finish to gun metal grey.
