mnischalke 0 #1 December 19, 2001 I haven't even heard a whisper about Skydive University's Search here. I am going down on the second week and would love to "know" some people when I get there. Thanks, mike
skymama 37 #2 December 19, 2001 Congrats to you, that you made it! Don't a lot of people apply for that?I'm not involved, but I am in the area, if you get a chance to jump when you're not involved with the classes.AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all. Geoff 0 #3 December 19, 2001 QuoteCongrats to you, that you made it! Don't a lot of people apply for that? The rumour-mill has it that the Search has changed from being a selective, subsidised event to encourage promising new RW talent and is becoming just another full-price skills camp, to which anybody who can pay is accepted.I'd be happy to be told I've heard wrong on that, of course!Either way, I'm sure there's lots to be learned, so have fun!Geoff
mountainman 0 #4 December 19, 2001 I think Marc (skymedic) will be there for the 2nd session of it. Shoot him a PM and ask. However, I think he's moving around that time, so it's probably up in the air.Have fun!-------------JumpinDuo.com...news, guestbook, and links.
mnischalke 0 #5 December 19, 2001 "Congrats to you, that you made it! Don't a lot of people apply for that?"Thanks skymama!! I am pretty excited. I was on a short reserve list until last week and then I got the acceptance notification the other day."anybody who can pay is accepted"Geoff, I know a few people who got the "we're sorry" letter. It made being on the "short reserve list" so much easier to stomach. Then they let me in! And I didn't even have to threaten violence.peacemike
Geoff 0 #6 December 19, 2001 Good for you, Mike! Have a great time. If it's anything like the Airspeed camp I did last year, you'll learn loads!Geoff
skymedic 0 #7 December 19, 2001 I got accepted but then learned that I am moving on that week...and plus they moved it from Sebastian to Deland....that was another reason why I didnt go...so I am glad you probably got my spot....cheers and good luck to you...MarcRes Firma Mitescere Nescite

skymama 37 #9 December 19, 2001 I didn't even know it got moved to Deland..you'll see me for sure now, whether you want to or not!I really wouldn't worry too much about your rig. I would hope that what happened to Marc's stuff was an isolated incident, because I haven't heard of that happening before out there since I've been going there.AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all. mnischalke 0 #15 December 19, 2001 It's in Deland. I am planning on coming down a few days early (screw deadlines) and make some jumps to get used to the place. I am also going to make every attempt at doing as many of those canopy control jumps (instruction, 5k hnp, video and debrief for $25 is THE deal) as I can squeeze in prior to the Search. Can you come out and play on Monday or Tuesday (feb 25,26)???If you, or anyone else, has any clue or suggestions about where to stay for the week, please let me know. Skydivedeland.com was less than helpful. I did read something about bunkhouses? Any info would be appreciated.I am probably going to rent a car and drive down with a tent. When I reak too bad that the bugs stop biting, I'll get a hotel room for that night and shower. mike
skymama 37 #16 December 19, 2001 There is a bunkhouse at the dz, but I would never stay in it! You can pitch a tent, but then it will be in February, so maybe that's a bad idea. You can call the dz, and ask for Solly-he has a nice bunkhouse, but since it's the winter, it may already be occupied by teams. Then, there's always the Holiday Inn in Deland. I think they have a skydiver's discount.Good idea to try to get in the canopy control classes. Scott Miller is da bomb! You'll learn so much from him.AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all.
scotts 0 #17 December 20, 2001 just caught the post. i'm going from 2/27-3/03 expecting to get there on 2/25.i'm pysched. what's wrong with the bunkhouse? is it infested with crotch crickets or something?
mnischalke 0 #18 December 20, 2001 Andrea, You're a doll. Thanks for the heads up on the bunkhouse situation. The Holiday Inn is like $75 a night. That's jumps. I will check with Solly and do a little research myself. Do you mind if I bounce a couple places off ya later since you're in the know?I couldn't wait to do the canopy control classes before. Now I am drooling. Thanks again!!mike
mnischalke 0 #19 December 20, 2001 Outstanding. Another DZ.commer at the Search. Are you interested in trying to get in on those canopy control classes if you get there early? If there's enough of us, they can't say no. See ya there.mike
weid14 0 #20 December 20, 2001 I'm not Andrea -- dont' even remotely resemble her, but -- last I know the Holiday Inn is like $59 per night skydiver rate. The Comfort Inn (which is right next door to it) is like $55 per night (and is newer). I know people staying in the bunkhouse, it's not bad in a communal living sort of way. Daytona is like 15 miles away also, but if you are coming during race week, make your reservations a month ago! (not sure when the dates for either event are)
dove 0 #21 December 20, 2001 Mike,Congrats on getting in!!! I went to the Search last year. I too was on the reserve list and got in when others backed out. I wept with delight when I found out! It was very apparent to me when I was there that they are indeed very motivated by money. HOWEVER, they are also kick-ass at what they do and I don't regret the huge expenditure at all! I learned so much and was a much safer and capable skydiver when I left. They are incredible teachers and I had the time of my life. As for accomodations, you will be so physically and mentally spent after back-to-back jumps all day and workshops at night that you may as well shower there and stay in a tent. Saves time and you will want to crash! Have a fantastic time! dove

I have to go to work on Wed for a week, so those 2 days(and the weekend before) are good.. I normally jump a day or two during the week - usually at Deland.. We can do some belly flying.......but too much of it makes me nervous - so I hope you freefly, too.. Mike
skymama 37 #23 December 20, 2001 A friend just told me that the race weekend is the 3rd weekend in February, so you should be fine with that if you are getting a room. Now all you have to worry about is Bike Week ruining your chances of getting a good rate on a room. I would for sure check with Solly on his house.AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all.
