NathanL100 0 #1 November 21, 2001 Hey guys, I need a little help deciding what to do. I really want to be a pilot, better yet a fighter pilot, but I can't decided if the Navy is right for me or the Air Force. So what do you guys think I should do when I graduate from college? Join the Navy or the Air Force? Or if you have any other information regarding becoming a military pilot, lay it on me, I'm trying to gather as much information as possible before I go talk to a recruiter. Thanks!! flyhi 24 #2 November 21, 2001 A wise Englishman said it best a long time ago, "Being on a ship is like being in prison with the added benefit of being able to drown." Plus they have better weights in prison and cable TV.However, AF pilots are a lot more anal than Navy ones. They fly by the book down to the last detail. Was flying with one once and told him to climb to 1000 feet. He wanted to know the rate of climb to use. Doh!Homer: Mmmm... urinal fresh. flyhi
SkymonkeyONE 4 #3 November 21, 2001 While a pilot, I am certainly no fighter jock; nor would I really want to be if being a military pilot were my chosen profession. The smart pilot would choose the Airforce and ask to fly big transport jets so that he could rack up the the right kind of hours for when he goes looking for that airline job at retirement. Also, screw being on a float; you are not going to get any skydives out at sea.ChuckMy webpage HERE
gemini 0 #4 November 21, 2001 You didn't indicate your education, but to be a pilot you better have a college degree! Don't believe a damn thing the recruiter tells you because it doesn't mean &*%#! (censored by Clinton's mom). I enlisted under the buddy plan and spent a total of 3 days with the buddy. Gemini... Fear? Fear is riding the plane down ... freeflir29 0 #5 November 21, 2001 Chuck is very wise!! Air Force big transports are the way to go! Plus fighter guys tend to go on TDY's for about 90 days or more a pop. Trash haulers fly a lot more but aren't away from home as much. More of the 2 week variety. Plus, the C-17 is one very nice airplane."Shut up Dummy!"- Fred G Sanford

I'm in my second year of college now and come hell or high water I plan to get a degree before I join. While were on the subject of college, what do you guys think is the best degree to graduate with if I want to be a pilot. An engineer or some kind of aviation degree (if an aviation degree exists)?Blue Ones,NathanA# Pending

OATSF14 0 #16 November 21, 2001 Navy or Air Force will do you well. Ditto for the Marines. "Semper Fi". About being in the Navy and not getting to skydive...bullshit. I was able to jump in Italy, France, England, and Spain. It does suck living on a boat. Just imagine spending January thru July for a typical cruise. As a pilot you will be able to get off the thing for 2.5 hours at a time. During my career we were able to fight, "play fight", British, French, Italian, German, and Egytian pilots. The only group that could fight us face to face was our own Air Force. Great pilots. Everyone is good, the Americans are best. More flight hours, more training, etc....As for flying cargo planes in order to get a job on the outside, that is true. (if you have no pride) A beautiful plane has a sharp nose, guns/missiles, goes fast, and will slap you everyonce in awhile to let you know that it is indeed a fighter. If that means nothing to you fly a bus. Bring the fighter guys their food, mail, other accessories and then leave. A technical degree would be nice. It is a hard road. Fly fighters, let the others fly the slow shit.
skymedic 0 #17 November 21, 2001 If you become a Navy pilot just make sure you dont pound EVERY plane into the ground...I was in the tail of a B-25 that a Navy test Pilot was flying, He broke the landing gear on the fucking thing.....(oops, I swore)...MarcRes Firma Mitescere Nescite

NathanL100 0 #19 November 21, 2001 Do you guys think that a private ticket will increase my chances of landing a flight slot?? And is there anything else that I can do to increase my chances of making it as a fighter pilot??Blue Ones,NathanA# Pending

skymedic 0 #21 November 22, 2001 You need your Bachelors degree first...preferably in a physical science or mathmatical type degree...i.e. math, engineering,etc.etc...those are the most important...then go to OCS....then HOPE you are able to get a flying contract...but if the military decides they need more bus drivers they will put you there regardless of what you were "guaranteed"...MarcRes Firma Mitescere Nescite
NathanL100 0 #22 November 22, 2001 I'm really into math and physics so I guess that that is helpful. I've heard that you can get a commitment in writing from the recruiter. Is that true??Blue Ones,NathanA# Pending
skymedic 0 #23 November 22, 2001 If you have your bachelors degree and complete OCS...if your going to the marines that is...not sure what its called in those other worthless branches...oh, sorry chuck...you will get a signed commitment...BUT that isnt a guarantee...like I said before the military can change you around if they want...MarcRes Firma Mitescere Nescite
jtval 0 #24 November 22, 2001 shit, you can have a degree in basket weaving and still get a slot flying in the A.F. but it wont help you and you'll catch a wrath of shit from everyone else. but the only reason you need a degree to be commisioned is so the see you have the initiative to follow though with something. trust me some of the officer here are the dumbest bastards ive ever met(they are usually the cocky ones) that goes for officer-enlisted-civilian-retired-ppl in general. the cocky ones are usually cocky b/c they have no idea how they got so far in life. just keep your wits about you and dont sign anything til you ran in past someone whoo know the b.s. jargon the sell!by B.S. -i'm not talking about a degreeHave fun, LIVE FREE, SkydiveJT
