NtheSeaOrSky 0 #1 November 5, 2001 So as a newbie, today I think I encountered the realization that skydiving is my true addiction. Saturday on the way home from the DZ, the car went kaput, or kaplooey, hard to tell. Verdict from the mechanic today.........engine locked up (and YES there was oil in it! ~180,000miles did it in) As he's telling me repair costs, $3000 for engine $900 labor, blah, blah, blah.....all I could think of was "that could be my rig!" So then I start to think, do I really need the car??? I mean I could try to buy lift tix over work and dive in, but how would I get back home???? Hmmmmmm, well the decision has to be to fix the car....its my way to the DZ. Do I need to have my head examined? Or is this a normal. First step is to acknowledge the addiction...um.....so I hear........
Slowfaller 0 #2 November 5, 2001 $3900 is a waste to spend on a car w/ 180k on it. Buy a rig! Enjoy yourself. Then you can buy a new ( not new ) car for $1000 or cheaper. Eat bolonga on hand for a while until you get paid to skydive. Then you'll be set!! What ever you do I hope everything works out!!CHris" You're so proud of your physique but you still want your cake. lazerq3 0 #3 November 5, 2001 The question is do you really need THAT car? is that car worth 3900$? Hell there are plenty of drivable cars for under 1000$. Trash that one and you still have planty of $$$ towards a rig!! From an addicts piont of veiwjason

skybytch 273 #5 November 5, 2001 I agree too! My car is barely worth $1000, but it runs great, looks okay and gets me to and from work and the dz. Someday I want to own a car that's worth more than my rig, but I'm in NO hurry for that - payments would cut into jumping money! pull and flare, lisa

RickFly 0 #7 November 6, 2001 I feel for ya there, as I'm in the same position as you. After comtemplating selling my car for a few months...was once my pride and joy!...I sadly bumped someone whilst in one of those dazes you sometimes get into...probably was staring at the clouds! :-) .....It's OK I thought! Insurance will cover it, but alas my excess was in the region of 450 squid! I couldn't believe it!!I've just got my A Licence after spending all my money on jumps..so I'm skint!.....And I've got this car to repair which I've not yet received the bill for! .. it goes on...So I'm in the car on Wednesday in Edinburgh dropping my friend off and I notice the temperature of the engine is off the scale..Bloody radiator blew...I've not had that DAM car on the road for a month, cause of the damage and the lack of dosh jumping. Now on Monday morining I've put it back in the garage to have it repaired again!!!!! as there could have been some more damage done during short drive back to my flat. more dosh!!So I'm waiting for a consolidated bill that will put my stomach in my mouth when I finally see it, And I'm still paying for the freggin motor!!All I want to do and wanted to do for ages, is save for my rig and do a bit of country hopping visiting DZ, get my jump numbers up and have some good old fun....but it just aint happening..every once in a while something like this happens. I'm telling ya. I'm wasting my youth working in an office all day to pay for all this crap! And I've not jumped in over a month! Sell the motor, pay off the garage bill, buy a small 10 year of fiesta to get me to the DZ and save like a banshee!!Next Summer is going to be wild!P.S.Does anyone want to by a motor? mountainman 0 #8 November 6, 2001 Yeah...its an addiction. When Laura and I decided to start skydiving, I had a '99 Jeep Wrangler. Well...needless to say, I sold that and bought a '95 Nissan Sentra for under $3000. If your car has that many miles on it, you dont want to spend that much money to get it fixed because you will not get that much money out of it.You never did put what kind of car it is. I'm sure some of us here could let you know if it would be worth it to fix. Hell, if I were you, I would lay down $2000 for an early 90's Honda with about 100k on it and drive it for another 100k. Then, go out and order yourself a new rig.Good luck!!--------------click me for a good time
Merrick 0 #9 November 6, 2001 Quote"I'm sure some of us here could let you know if it would be worth it to fix."Absolutely!! Let us know, there are enough people here that I'm sure one of us has some mechanical knowledge... in my very "limited" experience tho, $3,900 for an engine sounds like a little much to me. Especially if the mechanic's just going to rebuild it, now if he's trying to screw you into buying entirely new everything, then maybe, but I don't know... definitely get more than one opinion!"Pammi's Hemp/Skydiving Jewelry"
Strynx 0 #10 November 6, 2001 Yep i guess you're an addict. Option: rent a locker at your Dz. I rented a locker at mine and i ride a bike (1/12 long ride from my house) but it leaves me alot of $$$ to jump during the summer. As for your car does it make you smile. I'm sure that skydiving does so i think you should go for the rig :-)
mountainman 0 #11 November 6, 2001 Like Merrick said I was pointing out, someone here has some knowledge....like ME. I work part-time at an auto salvage yard. I can tell you that (depending on your car), it may be worth it to buy a used motor at a salvage yard. I put in the prices for all the parts into their computer system, so I see all the prices for every part. Most used engines are under $1000, except for really new, bigger engines which normally dont top $1500. Please, feel free to write here what kind of car, engine, etc and I'll do some checking here for you about an engine for it and if it would be worth it. Good luck, bro!--------------click me for a good time
freeflir29 0 #12 November 6, 2001 I don't think you have passed the point of no return until you write the note from "Apocolypse Now" "Sell the house, sell the car, sell the kids. I'm never coming home(crossed out) back."Then you're a hopeless case. "There once was a man named Enis....."-Krusty the ClownClay

NtheSeaOrSky 0 #14 November 6, 2001 OK, so the good news is, after pluggin around.....total repair cost $1250! Umm, provided nothing else is broken LOL. Best news of all is my company is footing the repair bill....business expense/Christmas bonus! All I had to pay for was the tow! I am glad to see, however, that I am not crazy (for the most part) and that I have a "support group" of fellow addicts! I do, however, think that when the time has come for a new car, the only appropriate burial for my current car is one of those as seen on the skydiving videos! I will keep you posted! Thank you to everyone!
FallinWoman 1 #15 November 6, 2001 "the only appropriate burial for my current car is one of those as seen on the skydiving videos!"I don't know...we burned a car the other weekend.....kinda cool.
