skymama 37 #1 October 24, 2001 Being a Florida gal, I've never done any winter sports, and now that the high temp. is going to be all the way down to 70 (!) this weekend, I don't know the best way to keep myself warm, especially at high altitudes. What are the best, and cheapest things for me to wear to jump in, or to wear under my jumpsuit that will keep me warm?AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all. freeflir29 0 #3 October 24, 2001 Don's joking aside. I have found that a pair of batting gloves and some Polypro underwear will keep ya warm. It keeps the wind out very well and you can pick it up at military surplus stores for about $30-40 a set. Maybe a neck gator to extend the protection of the polypro collar and a full face helmet and you should be all set. If you are coming up for the Free Flight Festival bring some warm undies. The temps this weekend are going to be chilly. 53H-33L F are whats forcasted."There once was a man named Enis....."-Krusty the ClownClay
skymama 37 #4 October 24, 2001 LOL, Don! But, that doesn't do me much good since you are in NC, and I'm in FL! Come up with another solution for me.AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all.
freeflir29 0 #5 October 24, 2001 "you are in NC, and I'm in FL!"Well....if you're coming to the Free Flight Festival I'll stop at Spencer's in the mall and pick up some "Fundies" The underwear made for two! PLFKING 4 #6 October 24, 2001 Clay is right on the money. I use the batting gloves if it's under 30 degrees, but the polypro is too warm for me. I've never worn more than a long-sleeve t-shirt and a pair of jeans under my jumpsuit......guess I'm just hot-blooded !Don
Pammi 0 #7 October 24, 2001 I've heard there are some type of silk thermals type things that keep you very warm and feel really good :) I am looking on Sears and Penney's sites now...they are supposed to be fairly easy to find too...we'll see :)Hemp/skydiving jewelry pics! Pammi 0 #8 October 24, 2001 Ah ha! That was them...they are actually not silk, but this:Cuddl Duds® Thermal V-neck Tee and Pants Exceptional heat retention without conventional thermal underwear bulk. Nylon and moisture-absorbing pima cotton are finely spun together for a non-clinging, smooth, comfortable fit. Washable. Made in USA and/or imported of domestic fabric. They are on the Penney's catalog site...I think I'll get some :)Hemp/skydiving jewelry pics!
skymama 37 #9 October 24, 2001 Oh, cool, thanks Pammi! Of course, the guys wern't too concerned about adding the bulk factor with the jeans and thermals, but I am. The non-clingy, smooth, comfortable fit sounds great to me!AndreaThe brave may not live forever, but the timid may not live at all.

jumpervali 2 #11 October 24, 2001 When it gets real cold a wet suit works good. I've used one under my tony suit and got hot when it was 30 F* on the ground. I get cold easy and it's the best thing I've ever used. You should be able to find one down there.jumpervali
SkymonkeyONE 4 #12 October 24, 2001 Lower body: Sport Hills or Bounce-proof tightsUpper Body: a turtleneck or a long-sleeve t-shirt and a gatorHands: winter-weight Neuman's if it's really cold; military Nomex flight gloves or regular Neumans if it's not that cold. I hate to wear more clothes than that, but find that just the tights and a turtleneck really do the job.Chuck"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy"

freaksister 0 #14 October 24, 2001 I wear Polar Max. It is made for sports (unlike cuddl duds) and wicks moisture away from your body (important!) It fits like cotton and lycra...stretchy, no bulk at all, and stays put. I love it. You can buy it online or at sporting good stores (probably places that sell skiing, bicycling, or mountain-climbing stuff). It costs about 75 for a top and bottom but its worth it!SisMusic should trigger some kind of response... - The Chemical Brothers

RemiAndKaren 0 #19 October 25, 2001 Polypropylene undies are modern version silk...Silk may feel "silkier" (allegedly) but the wicking properties of Polypro are far better. Its also cheaper then silk (yes, you can still find real silk termal undies, but its more and more rare) "Lifa" are a good brand name for it. It comes in various weights (the ligher one is a good start, but they also have a pricier heavy weight that borders on Polar fleece). On the subject of polar fleece: beware of cheap imitations! The real stuff (made by Polartec) is IMHO best. I am a sweaty bugger, and found that the cheaper versions do not wick away moisture as well as the real stuff. And, I think that now all of Polartec's fabric are 100% recycled form plastic coke bottles! warm and enviro friendly.... A great outdoor equipment site is http://www.mec.ca. Its a coop, you pay a one off $10 canadian for lifetime membership, their stuff is of extreme quality, and the price is a fraction (remember, the prices you see are canadian pesos) of the comparable stuff from, say, Mountain Hardware, North Face and the likes... And I can confirm they will send the catalog abroad, even to the UK...RemiMuff

sunshine 2 #21 October 25, 2001 I've jumped in cold weather many times. The one thing to always have is a turtleneck. It not only protects you against the cold air, but the ice too. My poor little dear, how ever will you survive? Maybe you should just stay on the ground, and use the money you would have spent jumping on a plane ticket for me. I can't promise to keep you warm, but I will at least be entertaining.(Note: The high will be in the low 40s here this weekend)It says your signature can be 100 characters, but I can only get it to accept 50. BenW 0 #23 October 25, 2001 For jumping year round you just can't beat an all in one winter suit! This goes under your RW or FF suit etc. Windproof, insulated, long neck, even has pockets!!They're expensive but definately worth the money. Just about all of the professional jumpers here in the UK (video, tandem, aff etc) use these all in ones. I bought one in Holland last year, made by a german company, and it has to be one of the best investments you can make - if you live in an area with a cold winter anyway... B.
