FastEd 0 #1 October 13, 2001 at about 6 grand i noticed this really painful err pain in my left side of my head, i got under canopy and i could hear nothing, not even my own speaking, and it was also VERY painful, after i got down, through a lot of yawning/swallowing/holding nose and blowing i cleared my ears and was merely left with a very bad headachy pain above my left eye, that was my 50th jump, the 36th from full altitude, and i've never ever ever had anything like that before, what could it be?i had a cold last week but i'm over that except for a cough, can that be it?!this was possibly the most painful thing i ever experienced, and really scared me that i'd perforated my eardrums and my hearing would be buggered for the rest of my life!Ed
FallingMarc 0 #2 October 13, 2001 Quotei had a cold last week but i'm over that except for a cough, can that be it?!That'd be my guess. I don't really know the situation though... but, if you're still coughing, that means there's still crap draining from your head down your throat, which could be blocking off the parts of your ears that relieve pressure.Marc
wingnut 0 #3 October 14, 2001 i say do not jump if you are congested, i say again do not jump if you are congested!!! i made the mistake once and was lucky not to rupture my ear drums. it was on like my 17th jump and didn't know better.. i got under canopy and coudn't even think strait the pain was so great. i got the pressure releived by holding my nose and blowing very gently but it could of been alot worse. if you notice on the way up you can't clear your ears very easily then ya should ride down it's not worth rupturing your eardrums and posibly lossing some hearing and aslo to not beable to jump for months!!!"up my noooossseee"- wingnut, at first euro dz.com boogie
FallinWoman 1 #4 October 14, 2001 I second/third the advice here. DO NOT JUMP IF YOU ARE AT ALL CONGESTED. I did last October and ruptured both ear drums and blewout my inner left ear. I experienced vertigo for about 48 hours (it is only fun for the first three minutes, then it SUCKS!!!!)Thankfully staying out of the sky for a couple months was all it took to heal. I am very careful about jumping with congestion, cua I may not be so lucky next time!Blue skies,Anne
TheMarshMan1 0 #5 October 14, 2001 I would guess it was a sinus if it was above your eye. I've had something similar happen to me while flying before- on an ILS in the soup (i know, what a convenient place) it was a very sharp, piercing pain that was focused just above my right eye and right temple. (Never had anything like that while jumping though). I also had just gotten over a head cold about a week before. Sounds like someting similar in your case. Hope its gets better soon...-Marshall
FallingMarc 0 #6 October 14, 2001 Just think of it this way... when we're perfectly healthy and jump, our ears take hell... when there's a problem in our ears already from congestion, draining, whatever... that's just asking for it!Ruptured eardrums are not our friends...M
FastEd 0 #7 October 14, 2001 yeah, i spoke to my dad about it (doctor) and he thought it must have been due to congestion, but i honestly thought i was over the cold, ahh well, i'm outta the skies for a coupla weeks, the headache pain has pretty much gone now so that's ok, but as someone said, it was soooooo painful i could hardly bear it!Ed
