Zennie 0 #26 September 25, 2001 QuoteNice quote!!I don't know if this is what you were referring to, but now that I thikn about it, in light of current events it has a morbid quality to it that wasn't initially intended. So I picked another couple stanzas form the same album that I also like. It has some obvious relevance to what's going on right now but I like it just in terms of relationships in general (which the first quote was also about). And like the last quote, I got to liking it before any of this happened.----------Zennie"Wear the grudge like a crown. Desperate to control. Unable to forgive. And we're sinking deeper." herv 0 #27 September 26, 2001 I too Donna do try to be objective as possible about stuff before I run off my big mouth and I sincerely respect your thoughts on my view of corporal punishment. I would like to explain to you why I disagree. But, after I wrote my original post, I thought that maybe I shouldn't have used the dropzone forum to express my views so strongly. I would like to respond to your comment (don't worry, maturely) via your email on your website, if that would be allright.
SpeedRacer 1 #28 September 26, 2001 I have a question about the Viet Nam war. This is strictly a history question, not about the topic brought up above, but I'd like to ask it here b/c people have brought the subject of the Viet Nam war up.I was under the impression that the reason we had to leave that war was because there was no strong government for the Vietnamese people to support that would be an alternative to the Communists in the North. I read that during the early sixties the US government was, at the same time they were supporting the fighting against the communists, trying to get someone better to take the place of the Republic of South Vietnam because they realized that the Diem regime was a corrupt, do-nothing, incompetent government that could not successfully command the support of the Vietnamese people. Please correct me if I'm wrong here, b/c I was just a kid during the Vietnam war & I've only read about it. But if it's true that the government of the Republic of South Vietnam was so bad, how could we ever have kept the Vietnamese people from either 1) sliding over to support the Commies or 2) just not giving a shit about supporting the Republic of South Vietnam? And if the South Vietnamese people themselves didn't care about their government, how could we ever have gotten a stable solution out of it just by fighting harder & bombing more? freeflir29 0 #30 September 26, 2001 Well Speedy, what you said is pretty true. The government was very weak and corrupt. That didn't have much to do with our pulling out of the war though. The reason we pulled out is because politicians made a mess of the entire situation. After somewhere around 55,000 casualties the majority of Americans no longer supported the war. The American politicians had some crazy idea that the North Vietnamese would just get tired and quit if we caused enough casualties. They had crazy policies that kept the military from going after the enemies war making capability. They simply kept letting a very well equipped enemy come south to kill American soldiers. In the end it was America that got tired and quit."This conversation ends right here Captain! You can talk to the ALO when he gets back."-MeClay
