Milo 0 #1 September 14, 2001 From AOPA: http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2001/010913boyer_02.html"When the security threats lessen, first will come the approval for Part 91 IFR flying. Then, no sooner than 48 hours later, should come the restoration of VFR privileges. "If I read this correctly, private pilots can not presently fly under IFR rules, and when (if?) that is finally allowed it will be at least 48 hours before pilots can fly under VFR. Dutchboy 0 #2 September 14, 2001 That's if you believe what the FAA has to say anymore. Definitely won't be any jumping this weekend. I was scheduled to have my checkride for my instrument rating on Tuesday. I doubt it will happen. The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
larry 0 #3 September 14, 2001 It really sucks that we can’t jump, but I can understand it. I heard they caught two groups of five people in New York, each trying to board a commercial plane with knives. They were all Arabic and some were pilots. What’s to prevent more of these terrorists with pilot’s licenses from renting a plane or chartering an aircraft? I don't know what can be done...-Larry
quade 4 #4 September 14, 2001 In light of recent events at; New York, Washington D.C., the aviation community, the financial community and with fire, police and other rescue workers, I think it's very important to try to not act like a spoiled child whose favorite toy has been taken away.If you're reading this in the safety of your home or office, then nothing in your life has appreciably changed in the long run.Simply put, the inconvenience of not being able to jump out of an airplane while this tragedy goes on is not that important.Grow up.If you can't jump this weekend -- give blood so that some people may be able to continue to live.If you can't give any more blood -- donate what you would have spent on jump tickets and beer to the Red Cross.Paulfuturecam.com/skydive.html
Dutchboy 0 #5 September 14, 2001 Good point! There is nothing neccessary about skydiving, it is purely fun aviation. I do think there might be some therapuedic value in jumping, however. Hopefully the pause in jumping won't be too long for that reason. The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra

wildblue 7 #7 September 14, 2001 quade,You made a couple good points, but I want you to see how I look at this.Jumping is important to me. I don't want what these cowards did to change my life or my plans, that's what they'd like to have happen. It's my own little personal act of defiance. If I could go to NYC and dig through the rubble with my bare hands, I would.Skydivers, probably better than most people, refuse to let fear dictate anything they do. I think if it's possible for your life to continue as normal, then it should. Of course, I also think all sporting events etc should go on this weekend. Yes, those who lost their lives and their families and loved ones will be in everyone's thoughts. As far as giving blood and donating money, I have and plan to.If we don't get to jump this weekend, I don't think anyone is really going to be upset, we all realize there's more important things happening in the world - but it sure would be nice to get away from all the bad news for a day or two. Then, I saw these two guys swoopin across the pond, and I was like 'weeeeeee!!!!' JMC 0 #8 September 14, 2001 I want to donate blood but don't know where to go. I called the Red Cross (1 800 GIVE LIFE) on Wednsday and they took all my info and said someone would contact me. They sent me an E-mail yesterday that said someone would call but I haven't heard from them since.Does anyone know who else I can call?
Dutchboy 0 #9 September 14, 2001 I have heard several people suggest that you wait a week or two. That will give the blood donation centers time to restock on their supplies, etc.The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
PhreeZone 20 #10 September 14, 2001 I heard from one of my friends at the local Red Cross today that they are going to start turning donors away due to the lack of supplies and the fact that the blood banks are near maxium capacity right now. NYC is not requesting anymore blood at the moment. The major donors that the Red Cross needs right now at people with type O positive or O negitive.Wait about 3 weeks then donate if you did'nt get a chance to this week. That will allow the supply level to replenish and since blood only has a shelf life of around 45 days the banks will be looking to replace some of the older blood it currently has on hand. Plus they will be needing all blood types again in 3 weeks not just type O.Flying on your belly is great..... if thats all you can do!
