PhreeZone 20 #2 September 8, 2001 Is it a Westwind III Beech 18? Those things can whip a King Air to 13000. Not Mullins King Air since you would need the space shuttle to beat him almost.Flying on your belly is great..... if thats all you can do!
Viking 0 #3 September 8, 2001 QuoteNot Mullins King Air since you would need the space shuttle to beat him almost.whats so special about that plane???I swear you must have footprints on the back of your helmet - chicagoskydiver
PhreeZone 20 #4 September 8, 2001 Insted of having regular engines on it he put the Dash 34's (I think)on it. They are the same ones as on a Super Otter. Climb to 14000 is 7 minuts flat. Total time for a load is 10 minutes from wheels up to wheels down. Its only like 25 minutes to 21000 feet. Rigged for O2 at all times, plus his famous... DOOR...EXIT EXIT EXIT count.... about that fast too . There is no spoting the plane. He calls door you better get your one floater out and GO on the first Exit. I cant wait to jump it this winter Flying on your belly is great..... if thats all you can do!
cameramonkey 0 #5 September 8, 2001 "Not Mullins King Air since you would need the space shuttle to beat him almost." Actually I was in an otter that appeared to be climbing just as fast last weekend... of course there were only 12 of us that load (including the pilot) so that may have had just a little to do with that :) (Didnt say it was an economical flight, did I?) PhreeZone 20 #6 September 8, 2001 There was a total of 9 of us on one of SDC's super Otters at Summerfest that climbed to 14500 in 10 minutes.... I was impressed Flying on your belly is great..... if thats all you can do!
mountainman 0 #8 September 8, 2001 I will have to agree with cameramonkey. I was on sunset load on Mullins' and we passed a S. Otter on the way to altitude right after take-off like you would pass someone on the interstate (minus the blinker), however by the time we were on jump run, the Otter was on jumprun as well. I think that the 7 minute myth is a little misleading.--------------Boogie pics coming!!!
Pammi 0 #9 September 8, 2001 WOOHOO!! Finally a boogie in our 'neck of the woods'! If at all humanly possible, we're there! Merrick should be able to jump by then and what a way to celebrate that! Too bad his freefly suit probably won't be here by then...ah well! Hemp/skydiving jewelry pics!

SkymonkeyONE 4 #15 September 10, 2001 QuoteIs it a Westwind III Beech 18? There are few things sexier than turbine retrofitted classics in my opinion. My all-time favorite is the Westwind DC-3 conversions. We have one sitting right up the road in Smithfield, NC which I get to jump at work on occasion. I still remember the first time I saw my first ones: "There I was, no shit". Laying on the top of a rigged cargo pallet on the ramp of the airport in Guatemala City, Guatemala. I was reading a book and faced off down the runway, when I see two flat-black DC-3's coming in. They weren't making ANY noise at all, so I looked closer. Yep, they rolled to a stop right next to me and shut down. I was stoked. Clipped and squared-off wings, tidy turbine nacelles, big soft-field tires. No markings whatsoever minus some very small flat-gray Fuerzas Area Salvadoreno lettering. Lovely. I went over and chatted with the pilots and walked through one of their birds. Right then I knew that I REALLY needed to win the lottery or get a very-rich sugar mama.Chuck
PhreeZone 20 #16 September 10, 2001 I must agree with that. After getting a change to jump a piston DC3 I can only imagine how sweet a Turbine one is. I'm lucky enough every weekend that there are'nt enough jumpers to get the CASA to fly theres a Westwind III Beech 18 just asking to be jumped. It takes lots of skill to fly beauties like that.... Before the Westwind came around there was the classic Beech 18 I jumped. That one was started up at the Labor day boogie to give a 8AM wakeup call. Having that thing scream over the DZ at 200 feet at 8AM after a long night drinking made me love the calm, quiet sounds of the turbines the rest of the day Flying on your belly is great..... if thats all you can do!
