cyberskydive 0 #1 September 4, 2001 You know the boring startup screens etc you get when you boot your win 95/98 machines? Ya know the ones that keep reminding you that you have Windows? Change them!First open your C directory, if you havent already set your computer to display all files, click view>folder options, and under the view tab check "show all files".then open up mspaint, click file > open, look in C for Logo.sysNOT Io.sysLogo.sys is that boring ass startup graphic disguised as a system file, open it in mspaintEdit it however you like! dont change the size tho, when your done, just click the "x" to close paint and say yes to save changes to Logo.sysvolia! your new and improved startup screen!make a copy of the old one in another folder if ya want first, but it doesnt matter since there is another hidden one there that will display if the Logo.sys file isnt present , compliments of microsoft. No I didnt make this up I' attaching a jpg file I use for mine if anyone wants to use it, click attachments above my pic on the left. to use this one though you'll have to paste it in place of the original image when you open Logo.sys in Mspant, and it loses a little color quality but I still like it enjoy!C-28534http://www.sunraydesigns.com
fonz 0 #2 September 4, 2001 Okay, I'll bite and play the smartass part.> Ya know the ones that keep reminding you that you have Windows? Windows always looks the same. If you work with Windows, there's plentyof things (read: annoyances) that remind you that you have Windows.> NOT Io.sysUm... better not, indeed. If you manage to screw this file up, your machinewon't boot anymore.> startup graphic disguised as a system fileHow typical for Microsoft...> Edit it however you like! dont change the size thoIn fact, you can even replace it with another file if you want. All that matters is the size. Dunno what happens if you try a different size, but it probably won't be catastrophic. Why don't you try Linux or FreeBSD for a change?Windows is the Manta under the operating systems!Blue skies,Alphons

DZBone 0 #4 September 5, 2001 QuoteWhy don't you try Linux or FreeBSD for a change?Right on. Go Micro$oft free and find out what life truly has to offer. By the way, is it me or do Linus Torvalds and Olav Zipser have a lot in common (in addition to easily-mispronounced names)?

fonz 0 #7 September 5, 2001 >> Windows always looks the same.> But you can change that Except for the color scheme, icons and background there's not a hell ofa lot you can change about your windows desktop.Transparent windows? Gradients on your window border? Custum shapesfor your window borders? Dockapps? Virtual desktops? Animatedbackgrounds? Getting rid of that hideous start button (to shut down youclick Start... ah such wonderful logic)? Different border colors fordifferent applications? No chance, buddy.Looking at a desktop, one can always tell if it's Windows.Windows is rigid as hell.Alphons (Windows is a games OS)

No chance, buddy.Actually a few years back I worked on a project called litestep and we achieved everything you suggest in Win9x. Not sure if it's still around or not as I left to work on linux-ware full time, but it was open source'd so I'd be surprised if it's not around in some form or another. But I would agree, the only reason I run it now is as my Win-tendo..caj

fonz 0 #11 September 5, 2001 > Actually a few years back I worked on a project called litestep and we> achieved everything you suggestAh, the AfterStep/LiteStep/Step thingy.Granted, that works. Too bad though, that a bunch of volunteers had todo something that a large and wealthy institution like Microsoft shouldhave done themselves. And it's unfortunate that the masses never seemed to discover it.Blue skies,Alphons
