Legal BASE

Recommended Posts

I thought about posting this over at the BASE Board, but they can be a little touchy over there, so I'll just toss this out for discussion here.
Does anyone know of anyone who has gotten the acronym legally? This would seem especially hard in the US, but someone has to have done this. Are there any BASE jumpers out there who only do legal jumps?
I'm not trying to disparage those who haven't. I just know if I were to BASE jump (*AHEM*) I would pretty much have to limit myself to legal jumps to keep my marriage intact. So I'm just wondering if it's do-able.

ahem well I think in the states your gonna have a hard time with the B and A, since this is the country that has brainwashed the masses into thinking that if it's a law it must be right (oh wait thats the whole world....were just hung up on death and sex). Before I start ranting I'll say that you can probably do it legally, but not in the states. This is an educated guess but probably true (most businesses would be scared shitless of getting sued so that makes B and A hard) but what the hell it's only breaking and entering, and your a white male so unless you have a record you'd only get your wrists slapped the first few times, just so you understand that their trying to save you from yourself. Otherwise just plan vacations around it

Yeah those were the two I was kinda thinking of that would be hard... especially A. You got the B covered with Bridge Day. I think there are some legal cliff jumps in Utah (could be wrong) so that's E. The trick with B & A would be persuading the owners that they wouldn't get sued if you bounced. I'm not sure any sort of waiver would be sufficient in today's legal climate.
As far as the getting caught bit goes. I do have a record from stupid stuff I did in college. Whether I'd get a break because of the time is a different matter (I can't control my race, so I'm going to leave that aspect alone) but I really can't chance it.
I've even thought about low-altitude-quasi-BASE jumps from a balloon (be too afraid of the prop wash on a heli). I dunno. Guess I'll have to settle for Bridge Day and dream about Kuala Lumpur and Angel Falls.

I posted exactly this question on the BASE Board 6 months or a year ago. Maybe there's an archive.
I got several replies. One from Tom Sanders saying that he'd done all 4 objects legally and knew several others who had. A Russian guy replied that it was easy in Russia because there weren't many laws against it. I also got a few indignant replies from people arguing that legal BASE was easy in the US, because it's not illegal at all and it's just that the courts keep misinterpreting the law and convicting innocent people.
They're not too touchy on the BASE board (except when they're criticising each other, which seems to occupy most of their time) - as long as you don't mention or ask for the names of individual sites - even legal ones. The theory is that if the legal ones get mentioned too often then someone will find a way to make them illegal. I guess the very high profile ones like Kjerag, Petronas, Bridge day are OK, but not the less known sites.

I don't think anybody has ever been convicted of "BASE jumping" per se. Not even in the national parks (there it's "air delivery", believe it or not). As Snowflake mentioned, it's usually breaking & entering, trespassing and/or reckless endangerment.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I know there's no law specifically against BASE. The argument I received back on the BB said that even the other laws (aerial delivery, trespass etc) were being incorrectly applied to discriminate against a misunderstood minority (the BASE community). The point seems to be that legal / illegal is a matter of opinion, and in their opinion they do legal BASE.
