Sad story, happy ending

Recommended Posts

That is very very uncool. :(.
You need to sit with your buddies and learn how not to ever do that again.
1. If you get out of sight of the outside video guy, look for him, because he is not paying attention to you, he is filming the base.
2. The outside video guy should be very alert when another freeflier has their back to him as they could suddenly backslide/track in to him. He should also be very alert and clear the shit out of his airspace when everyone that is supposed to be with the base is not.
My friend Levin and I had a collision once because we entered a situation we had never thought of. Luckily all it did was surprise us. We now break off from a tube jump differently:D.

Oh wow. Okay, perhaps I'm a bit too moody this morning with stuff going on with me personally, but that was very scary to read. It even brought tears to my eyes at the possibilities. Things could have turned out horribly and I can't believe what a casual, amazing attitude you have about it and wanting to get back in the sky already. Your attitude and courage is admirable.
Take care of you, Dove. The sky will be there when you're ready again.

Morning, Dove.
You are in my prayers, too. As I am sure you are in many prayers from others here. Let us know if we can help.

and even though that's not even close to a dangerous delay from 4k, my mind started screaming "GET IT OUT GET IT OUT GET IT OUT PULL PULL PULL!!!" There was never even a hint of "Take it easy, take your time, you've got a backup."

After my mal, I was talking to Vinnie about it. He asked me if I had thought of my Cypres, and I said no, never even crossed my mind. I remember being surprised that it hadn't, either. Vinnie said "Good. That's the way it should be". I took this to mean that I did exactly what I was supposed to, i.e. pulled my own silver, and didn't wait for "something to come save me". Which is what your mind was saying to you, too, I think.
I have thought since then that the situation which Dove encountered is what the Cypres is designed for...if you are broken and can't get to your handles, or if you are unconscious for some reason. It is there as a final resort, a last desperate measure. It is up to me to pull whichever handle, if at all possible, and not wait for the "Deus Ex Machina".
On a personal note, I am tickled that there are people who have decided that their life is worth more than the $1200 or so a cypres costs. I don't have to know you to know that you are worth it. I hope many, many more people read this post, and it stirs them into thinking long and hard about the decision to get an AAD.

Watcher,
I know you are lurking so I know you are reading this. The jump in Deland could have been your last if I had been pulled just a little higher up on your neck instead of the top of your rig. Imagine how i would have felt since I was the one who hit you even though it wasn't my fault. None of us are invincible. Please take this post into serious consideration and get an AAD soon. It isn't there as a daily use piece of equipment but you my need it any day you jump.
Dove....what did the DR say this morning???

Mouth,
I'm so glad you posted that about Watcher, because the exact same thing went through my mind about our jump when I was reading about Dove.

So what exactly would you tell somebody who doesn't have $975 for a Cypres? Stop skydiving until you have saved up enough for one???
I have jumped without a Cypres and if I am ever flat broke, I will sell my Cypres to keep jumping. The main lesson I relearnt from Dove's story was : be careful about who you jump with and try to maintain visual contact at all times. Oh, and I also learnt that wearing a full-face helmet when freeflying might not be such a bad idea after all! ;)

Wow Dove, I am glad to hear that you are okay (or as good as you can be). Even though we know we are in a dangerous sport, it is always saddening to hear of one of our "family" members getting hurt. Take care of you and get better soon!!! *hugz*

OK. So here's what the doctor said. 2 broken ribs, trauma to the diaphragm, intestines and stomach (hence the swollen abdomen and pain), bruised lung on the right side. The scary tingling in the fingers on my right hand is due to a damaged nerve in my arm, thank goodness! I was worried there was something wrong in my spine or neck. He said that nerve should heal itself, but the tingling might stay for 2 weeks. My tongue is healing quite nicely and I ate a little solid food today. Oh, Joy!!! I am so sad I won't be able to jump for awhile. And right before the Labor Day Boogie too! Pooh! But I won't rush back in - cause when I get back I want to be back 100%!!!!! And for anyone who can afford an AAD, PLEASE get one! And remember to turn it on each and every day you jump. To my friends near Richmond, guess I won't be able to jump with you on Sept. 14. I was SO looking forward to it too! But I hope to make some trips to FL this winter - especially now that my summer was cut short! I LOVE you all so much - reading your posts has really helped me stay positive. And I am excited to get healed and start jumping again. Please stay safe and make TONS of fun jumps for me! Not only am I in pain, but I experiencing SEVERE jumping withdrawal already! Cheers!

Glad you're ok.
But I keep getting this vision of your tongue hanging out of your mouth in freefall... like a little kid when he's fascinated with something... and that's how you about bit it off... heheh..
Then, I saw these two guys swoopin across the pond, and I was like 'weeeeeee!!!!'

Damn dude!!! I read this during work...and almost got sick!!
Thus the reason I won't learn to freefly until I at least have one body position "down pat"!!!
Glad you're okay dude!!! Sorry to hear about your tongue...that has got to SUCK!!!!
I have heard that about L&B....I will only by L&B alti's for that reason.
Better health and speedy recovery!

Hi all. Never thought it would happen to me (who does?!?!) but I had a pretty severe skydiving accident yesterday.

Glad to hear you're ok.. Freefly collisions can be pretty serious.. I've had one, but luckily I was in a stand and not head down.. The guy flew below me and corked - my feet hit his container(he was belly to earth), my legs collapsed, and it sent me tumbling.. He was hurting from the impact to his back(much of it absorbed by the rig), and my legs were bruised quite bad.. If I had been head down - I could've broken my neck..
This is a damn good example as to why you shouldn't do anything but 1 on 1 freefly jumps with somebody that you don't know their skills..

There are two reasons that I jump with a Cypres.. The first is in case something like Dove's accident happens to me, and I am unable to pull for whatever reason.. The second is if I just completely lose altitude awareness, and don't pull - the Cypres MAY save my ass and allow me to take up a new, safer sport.. I know - everybody says they will always pull.. So do I.. But a lot of people that are dead thought the same..
Oh, and if you do get a Cypres - get used to pulling a bit higher.. That jump you went sailing by me in freefall when I was under canopy could've easily caused a two out situation..

I have to strongly dissagree with you on that Mike... Unless someone has the nasty habit of pulling at 1K, you really shouldnt change your pull altitude... but then again, if you have the habit of pulling at 1K, you should change that, period.

Remi,
I keep telling him to pull higher but he swears he was in the saddle by 1500. I have a protrack so it tells me when I'm there...period. I have a goal to be in the saddle by 1800 which means I pull no later than 2500 or before if possible. I shoot for 3000. I watched Watcher pull it low once Saturday again and it almost scared me to death. I even got in the car and went looking for him thinking he was dead somewhere. He did a big way later in the day and they all pulled low....I'm sorry but it scares me.
EVERYBODY pull higher as it is lower than you think. Give yourself time to deal with any situation. I for one want you all here years from now...Newbies or Old Timers.
My sermon for the day. I'm sure someone will flame me saying they always pull at whatever altitude...so be it. I'm being a "Mother" I guess sorry. That is what I do in real life.

Hi Lisa,
My point was that someone whould not alter their pull routine because they have a cypres or not. I dont know of the perticular person you refer to.
No one should not be pulling at an altitude that comes into cypres territory, wether they have one or not.
That being said, our sport is full of variables: a longer track might be the lesser of 2 evils when in traffic.

Well, no - it wasn't 1k...but I was under a fully inflated canopy, stowing my slider at 1900ft when he went sailing by in freefall.. Pitched about 2 seconds later...and video doesn't lie.. IMO, this is dangerously close to Cypres territory..

I am with mike on this one....1700 or less and you throw a snively spectre out there... and that is a little too close for my taste. cypress is supposed to go at 750 or so. its the "or so" part that would frighten me...
