"Man using parachute gets hung up on Statue of Liberty

NEW YORK -- A man using a parachute to glide above New York Harbor became snagged on the Statue of Liberty's upraised torch requiring a rescue effort this morning.
The man, who could be seen hanging on the outstretched arm of the statue, was pulled to safety by New York City Police officers on a deck directly below the torch just after 10 a.m EDT. The red parachute had remained draped over the torch for about half an hour.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, was arrested by U.S. Parks Service Police. The circumstances of the incident were not immediately clear.
A person answering the phone at the Statue of Liberty park would not comment on the incident. Messages left for spokespeople for the parks department were not immediately returned".

I heard them say on the tv that it was the same guy who bungie jumped from the Eiffel Tower last year, but I didn't catch the name.
He had some kind of motorized thing on him. I don't think it was a "real" skydiver-motors are for sissies! :)Andrea
hmmm, thinking of a new tag...any suggestions?

Just got the following from an e-mail (that I have no idea where from). This is different than from above:
===================================
LIBERTY ISLAND, New York (CNN) -- A Frenchman planning to bungee jump off the
Statue of Liberty was rescued Thursday morning after his parachute became
caught on the statue's torch.
Stuntman Terry Do dangled for more than a half hour on the wrist of the raised
arm of the statue as his red chute draped over the torch above.
He became caught about 9:32 a.m. EDT, a half hour after the monument opened to
tourists. He was rescued AT 10:07, apparently uninjured, said Sgt. William
Vitolo of the U.S. Park Police.
The stunt prompted officials to close the monument and evacuate Liberty Island
out of concern that the stunt might be a terrorist assault. The island was
reopened, but the statue remained closed late Thursday morning.
Do, in his mid- to late 30s, reached the statue by using what he has called
a "paramotor," a parasail with an engine attached.
According to a statement released to the media , Do had planned to embark from
a building in New Jersey about one-and-a-half miles from the statue to land in
the narrow platform that surrounds the torch and then bungee jump from there.

Do is taken into custody after being rescued
Vitolo said the statue was not harmed, but officials were seen inspecting the
torch after the incident.
"What started here as kind of amusement or amazement turned to concern," said
tour guide John Keatts, who said he was on a tour boat circling Liberty Island
when Do landed. "Is this terrorism? Is there going to be a bomb? Is there going
to be an explosion? What in the world's going on? So it was a little frantic
for a while."
He said boatloads of tourists were evacuated.
Do has claimed to have made similar jumps from the Eiffel Tower and the Golden
Gate bridge, but those claims could not be immediately verified.
Do, who practices in his hometown of Annecy, France, has said he has performed
these stunts "for the pleasure."

"Fan Dangle
Man Using Powered Parasail
Gets Caught on Statue of Liberty
N E W Y O R K, Aug. 23
— At first, tourists at New York's Ellis Island this morning wondered if they were witnessing some sort of high-flying political statement. Instead, it turned out to be downright daredevilry — gone wrong.

The sight of a parasailor flapping on the torch of the Statue of Liberty, his arm stretched out for help, caught the attention of startled tourists as rescue workers struggled to bring the stuntman down.
Nearly 45 minutes later, it was all over. Rescue workers brought down the man, believed to be a seasoned parasailor, under the scrutiny of TV cameras.
Neither the man nor the statue was injured in the accident.
Dramatic Rescue
The man, identified as French citizen Thierry DeBaux by U.S. Parks Police, was taken into custody.
Authorities believe DeBaux embarked from a building in New Jersey about a mile from the statue equipped with a "paramotor," a parasail with an engine attached. They believe he intended to land on the narrow platform that surrounds the statue's torch and then bungee jump from there.
A spokesman for the U.S. Park Police said they intend to charge DeBaux. He can also be charged by the Federal Aviation Administration for violating flight regulations.
The rescue operation was conducted by the U.S. Parks Police, U.S. Park Service and the NYPD Aviation and Harbor Unit, according to the U.S. Park Police.
Seasoned Stuntman
Initial reports said DeBaux claimed to have conducted similar, though more successful, stunts on the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, but those claims could not be immediately verified.
DeBaux, who practices in his hometown of Annecy, France, has said he performed stunts "for the pleasure." He also said he had been planning the Statue of Liberty stunt for eight years.
Measuring more than 300 feet from the bottom of its pedestal to the torch, the Statue of Liberty was presented to the people of the United States by France July 4, 1884. It was erected on its current site, overlooking the New York harbor, two years later.

That should teach that dumbass a lesson.. If he had planned to BASE off the torch, he would have had a BASE rig instead of a bungee cord, and could have just jumped after becoming entangled with the torch.. In this case, BASE jumping could've saved him from getting arrested.. ;)

I actually saw the news footage on TV this AM
the guy was in deed flying a motorized paraglider. Hi plan was to land on the torch and bungee off it. But he botched his landing and he ended up dangling on the side of the torch with his canopy stuck on the torch it self. he wasnt able to get out of his "predicament" by himself, so he waited there until the authorities "helped" him out...
