Dutchboy 0 #1 August 14, 2001 I just wanted to warn any other skydiving pilots who might be considering flying into Skydive Chicago (8N2). Flying into this airport is extremely hazardous for several reasons.First off, the information in your airport directory is probably wrong! The location is wrong as are the runway numbers. I suspect the information was correct for the old airport. I got my info from the online AOPA directory.Second, despite the fact that there is a published frequency for this airport none of the jump planes appear to use it. So you will have no indication as to what jump operations are currently in progress. Nobody on the ground appears to monitor this frequency either.Third, your requests for airport advisories will likely be ignored by both the pilots and people on the ground, as were all four of mine. So you'll have no idea what is happening or even which way to land.I would highly recommend you fly somewhere else and get to the DZ some other way, should you chose to jump here. The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
weid14 0 #2 August 14, 2001 Out of curiousity, did you talk to anyone there about that? I have no intention of flying out there (mainly because I don't have a pilot's license), but am curious as to what their response would be. P.S. I'm not a Roger hater either, went out there when I had around 200 jumps, he treated me very well, even organized some 9-10 ways which were excellent (for me at that time). PhreeZone 20 #3 August 14, 2001 Did you talk to manifest about it? Does their web page have the correct info? I was up there for summerfest and saw a lot of traffic in the pattern and can only guess how har it was to land uncontrolled at the airport.Do I HAVE to do another raft dive??? Dutchboy 0 #4 August 15, 2001 Actually Roger spoke to me just after I landed (in a very unfriendly way). I didn't know it was him at the time. According to my instruments I was 3-4 miles away when an entire Otter load of jumpers openned up perhaps 1000 feet to the left of me. I immediately flew directly away from them. This was a very scary experience for all involved. Roger seemed more concerned with bitching at me than finding out what caused the situation. So I guess you now know what their response would be. I was quite disappointed that nobody else was concerned about how similar incidents could be prevented in the future. Dutchboy 0 #5 August 15, 2001 No, their web page doesn't have any info. I find it strange, since all the other dropzones have such info. Quincy had a whole page on flying in to the WFFC as well. The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
freeflir29 0 #6 August 15, 2001 Hmmm...Maybe Roger should pull his head out and realize that his entire operation as well as some peoples lives are endangered by this hoky set up. I might expect this in Alabama but damn.....LOL No Offense Chuck....."I used to know a girl...She had two pirced nipples and a black tattoo"-EverclearClay
Viking 0 #7 August 15, 2001 that whole thing sounds like a mid-air waiting to happen doesn't the uspa or the faa know about this shit!!?? if not call out the hounds on that shit man. someone is going to get killed sooner or later. Remember when Sex was safe and skydiving was Dangerous?
bbbilly14 0 #9 August 15, 2001 The runway is 4000 ft, I think, and it's paved. If I am wrong, it is longer. As this is my home DZ, I have seen lots of skydivers' planes, other than jumpships land there. I have never heard of any problems from pilots. I'm not a pilot, but I talk to everyone I come in contact with, including pilots. I have also never experienced a plane, other than a jumpship, landing below me. I am a newbie, but I have 70 jumps, all at SDC. Maybe that means nothing, maybe it means a lot.
Dutchboy 0 #10 August 16, 2001 I think that if they were to publish a standard proceedure for flying into this airport on their website, and with the AOPA and/or FAA that anyone flying into the place for the 1st time would know what to expect. That and updating the information AOPA has on the airport would be simple and greatly enhance everyone's safety. The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
mattb 0 #11 August 16, 2001 I found the following on their web site:http://www.skydivechicago.com/DZ/location.htm - the page has a link to an external site with airport directions. I'm not a pilot so I can't tell if this is good or bad info. but it seems like a lot of information.I also looked at several other web site for dzs and found that all but one had no info. (1 out of 6 in my highly informal survey)-mob
weid14 0 #12 August 16, 2001 Uncontrolled airport - FAA does't really get involved (except for the aircraft inspection part). USPA doesn't govern flight procedures - actually they dont' govern anything at all, they publish recommendations.
Dutchboy 0 #13 August 16, 2001 Yeah, I've gotten information from this site before. This information is more correct than the information from AOPA. Still no procedures on how to behave around the airport, approaches, etc. Most DZ's aren't on private airports, which is why there is no information on flying in there. At a public airport, jump pilots have to communicate with everyone else so that everyone knows what is going on. If you look at most DZ's on private airports they do publish procedures. The Dutchboyhttp://www.geocities.com/ppolstra
