Loads of free time

I've been there. It happened to me a few years ago, so I took the opportunity to finish my degree and make a career change.
It could be tough for awhile, but try to make the best out of the opportunity. If nothing else, you are freed from your last job and can look for a new one with a clear mind.

That's the good news, the bad news is I got laid off this morning.

Sorry to hear it.. Got anything new in the works? It seems that half the computer world is downsizing right now, so I guess a good job will be hard to come by.. I'm sure glad I didn't get into that field of work..

Funny you should say that, Mike. I've been seriously considering giving up the computer thing and trying to get a pilot job, or maybe teach and fly (CFI?)
What time I don't spend with the lawyers this week I'll be trying to put the last finishing things on my plane, and hopefully doing a little flying.
I told my CFII that I would either be slowing down or speeding up my training, I don't know which yet. I had an interesting flight today. Flew to RMG to shoot an ILS approach and found the RMG VOR was down, then flew to OUK to shoot a localizer approach and the NDB was down. So we flew back to 47A and he suggested I use the complex signoff he just gave me to play in the Arrow a bit. I told him with the day I was having I didn't think it would be a good time to do my 1st solo in that plane!
Too many decisions to make in a day.

Time to work on those ratings huh? A little AFF or Tandem cash would come in handy right now. I know how you feel. I may be on strike soon. Guess I'll have lot's of time to work on getting to my 100th!

The only problem is that with 127 jumps and just over a year into the sport I can't get a tandem rating and I need another 3.5 hours of freefall time for the AFF rating. That is about $4800 and way too much time. It would honestly be far cheaper for me to get my comercial pilot's license and Certified Flight Instructor rating. The $$/hour is less, but I could work all week, not just weekends (and winter time too).
Sad thing is I'm not going to be skydiving for a while. I'm still going to Quincy, but outside of that skydiving is something that will have to wait.

I am so sorry to hear that - seems you're not the only one from the threads I've read on here recently. One of us dz.comers needs to get filthy stinkin' rich and hire the rest of us, grossly over pay us and then we can all jump our hineys off together!

Hey, Dutch-- I'll buy ya a couple of fun jumps; I'll even meet you in Rome Sunday if you can break away from the whyffo-- if not then, think about it for next weekend-- I still need to work on my Cessna exits anyway, and the Spectre lands jest fine.... you don't have to go without jumping until Quincy, 'lessen you jest want to.... and now's a great chance to change what you work at into something you want to do...

Yeah those ratings requirements can be a little tuff sometimes. With some computer experience I'm sure Bellsouth will give you something to do. Not that you'll need a wheelbarrow to carry your paycheck home but it's work and the benefits are good. Let me know....there's a program here where I can put your name in with HR and if they hire you I get $1,000. I'll split it with ya?????? Hell....it's not like I work too hard...I post on here all day.

Join the club! You get used to it after awhile. I have no children or spouse to worry about, so that helps. It sure is fun though when you can just go wherever your heart desires, whenever it desires. I have to get another job someday but for now, I am free time mama! hehe

Well, while there is a slowdown in hiring at the airlines, there is still quite a demand at the regional level - and an insane demand at the CFI level.. If it's something you've wanted to do, do it.. There are lots of places looking for CFI's - I'm sure you could get a full time CFI job pretty damn quick in the Atlanta area.. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help..
