hackish 8 #1 October 22, 2014 I've been making a few little goods for friends with my machines. Trouble is they frequently ask for different colour stitching. A local shop has #69 nylon thread for $10 for 1/2oz... ouch. 8oz are $30 from paragear. It's expensive to purchase 3 spools of each type of thread for every project. Does anyone have a suggestion? Even a source for empty spools I could wind off a bigger spool? The objective is to run my double needle and 20U without having to move the thread around for each operation. -Michael
Alexg3265 0 #2 October 22, 2014 Thethreadexchange.com And atlaslevvy.com They have all sizes and types and colors of nylon thread and any color you can imagine. Thread exchange I prefer. But these are 2 I've gotten lots of thread from Both are way cheaper than paragear. By half at least.I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. hackish 8 #3 October 22, 2014 Thanks, I like cheap. I've always been afraid of getting some substandard quality thread, but atlas does have some recognizable brand names for less than 1/2 the price of paragear. I did some searching to try and find a source for blank spools so I could just pick up a few 1/2lb spools and spool a few hundred feet on each as needed. While I may end up making my own, does anyone have a source for these? -Michael

I'd suggest a tailor shop, or clothing manufacturer that operates near you, or sending a request to a gear manufacturer or a large loft and asking nicely. Alexg3265 0 #5 October 22, 2014 I have a pretty respectable selection of e thread (20+ colors), most from thread exchange and I have yet to see any substandard or cheap thread. I ordered neon orange from another supplier, and even though the strength is right, it unraveles and the individual pieces separate very easily. Had some issues with the sewing machine grabbing half the thread.... I don't use that thread unless I have to. Not coated or bonded correctly? Only e thread I've ever seen do that. I had some empty spools, pretty sure the wife threw them away. A 1/4" Woden dowel hooked up to a drill winds very fast. Throw the dowel into a cup or jar and you have a 10 cent way to roll what you need and feed properly. It doesn't work well for storage obviously, but in a pinch it worked fine for me.I was that kid jumping out if his tree house with a bed sheet. councilman24 37 #6 October 22, 2014 Orange thread may be the wrong twist. See poynter's for explanation.I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
Alexg3265 0 #7 October 22, 2014 Ahhhhhhhh, no it makes sense. I didn't even think of that. The thread seems stringy if that makes sense. Let's see if I'm following properly... If a left twist left spin comes off the spool it tightens itself when pulled off the top of the spool whereas a right twist wound left will essentially untwist itself... I'm not talking unrolling them, but pulling from the top. Makes sense in my head. I'm going to take a closer look at that thread when I get home! hackish 8 #8 October 23, 2014 councilman24 Orange thread may be the wrong twist. See poynter's for explanation. Brings up an important point for when I need to spool thread on to the new bobbins. I wouldn't have thought about that one... I think I should probably pull it directly off rather than off the top like the machine does. -Michael
councilman24 37 #9 October 23, 2014 You may be better off just buying the 2oz spools from thread exchange. I'd expect a mess if I tried to wind my own spool and then feed it. But I was lucky and got the 2 (neon and regular) 12 color 1 ounce sets from DJ Associates when they had them. Not cost effective to reproduce again. Look around at the fabric stores again. Upholstery thread comes in some weird colors but it has matched some faded container thread. And your price seemed high. I'm old for my age.
