Ground poisoning

Recommended Posts

I had my most vivid skydiving dream ever last night. I even remembered every bit of exit, which never happens on my real-life jumps - I sorta shut my brain off and arch. It was a solo over the desert. Lots of loops and tracking, yet I can't even feel the wind. I have no helmet, no goggles, and just streetclothes for a jumpsuit. My altimeter has been replaced by my wristwatch, which luckily swirled and folded in on itself and slipped into altimeter form as I watched it. Briefly, as I try a frontloop, my hands are handcuffed to my chest strap, but as I go past headdown the handcuffs crumble away. At pull time I find myself looking up at a white parachute that's completely spread spanwise, but chordwise it's completely folded on itself. No sign of the slider. I reach up and pump the toggles and it spreads out and the slider pops into being just behind my head - which is odd because I've never stowed my slider ever and doubt I could do so on my current gear. I look around for traffic and realize I'm over a series of hills with narrow channels cut into them. Everyone else is carving down through the channels, so I spiral down and drop in with them. I'm carving and swooping and I'm so close that my canopy is above the canyon walls but my toes are skimming the dirt. My outer lines brush up and knock dirt off of the channel walls. I don't really know what I'm doing but I just follow everyone else and the reds and browns and tans are all blurring together, until we burst out into a massive crater and touch down gently on the only patch of grass in a 10-mile radius.
I wish my fucking elbow would heal up so I can go jump!!

Here is an odd one...
what does it mean when you have a dream of someone you jump with...who you really like...and they bounce??
I was awoken about 2 weeks ago with a horrible dream of sitting in the hangar talking to people and hearing a scream coming from above...only to look and see someone I consider a friend hit the concrete just outside the hangar. The scream I let out in the dream was actually a real one and woke me up!!
I must admit...it was VERY DISTURBING!!!:(
God, for everyone's sake...I hope nobody ever HAS to witness ANYBODY go in. what a horrible image that would be.
Sorry for the downer people.

What a horrible dream. I had a dream the other day that someone at my dz without a cypres got knocked out on exit but I swooped down and was able to pull their reserve at about 1500ft. Of course, In real life I'd probably not be able to catch the person and we'd both burn in but it's a dream and I can do whatever I want in a dream. I had another one where the Cessna crashed with the pilot on board after he told us to exit at 2000ft. That was a crappy dream. I don't see how the pilots at my dz can fly us without a parachute.

I've had a couple of dreams where I've just not pulled but have touched down onto my arse at about 5mph, stood up, brushed myself off and sneaked back into the hangar hoping the CCI didn't see my appalling omission. That's pretty nutz.
And I had one once where I jumped out, went to look at my alti, noticed I wasn't wearing one, went to deploy and realised I'd forgotten to put my rig on...and all I thought in my dream was..'Bloody hell! I can't believe this wasn't picked up on the flight-line check!'
What a weirdo!
I think dreaming about your mates going in means nothing other than that you care about your skydiving friends and your subconscious is aware that this is a dangerous sport with potentially grave risks. Sometimes I can't bear to think about my boyfriend jumping...But then, it's not like I want him to stop, stay at home and become a chess player!

Cool dream, PT...Blaine and Wes...those are horrible! Blaine's was the worst, I must say. I have bounced in a dream but I haven't ever dreamed of seeing someone else do it. yikes!
My latest weird skydiving dream was a few days ago...I dreamed that I was at this huge DZ with a swimming pool that must have been the size of TWO olympic size pools. Everyone was swooping the pool and landing in it, and there were like five cutaways, one was at like 50 feet - who didn't pull the reserve but just landed in the water! (of course they were fine) Maybe I should send that to Guy Manos as an idea for a future skydiving flick! LOL) Anyway, after that like all these people were coming up to me wanting to order hemp closing pin necklaces...a good friend of mine was running around with NOTHING on except a towel, trying to hit on a female skydiver who didn't want him. I woke up then. Too damn strange.

I had a dream where I bounced, but it was way back when I decided I wanted to try skydiving but before I actually did it... good thing it didn't stop me! But just a couple of days ago, coincidentally, I had a dream where I jumped over the golf course where I work, I think it was a demo or something, and when I pulled and looked up, all the lines were straight and the slider was down, but my canopy was all misshapen, like it had a line-over. It was wierd, I just looked at it and tried to figure out what was wrong, because it was flying like normal too, it just wasn't rectangular. I ended up landing it in a lake, too, then I woke up. Wierdness abounds.
Oh yeah, and...

They can't... at least not legally, I'm almost positive...

I thought it was pilot choice. Why would CASA or Skyvan pilots need one? A CASA is designed to be able to climb with only one engine. A Cessna Pilot on the other hand would be better off with one since they are about 3 feet from the open door and I hear they dont fly well with the engine out. Thank goodness I've never needed to jump a Cessna!! It seems like it would be a little cramped in there :S. I dont know how some people can actually like those things... :)Whoa... That was cool!

I think it depends on the plane. My dz has a King Air and two Cessna 182's. I'm pretty sure the FAA FAR's state in which planes the pilots have to wear a chute. Not sure why and how they pick which ones though.

How spoiled can one jumper be? Good grief. Let me tell you something, dude...if you lived as far from a dz as I do, you wouldn't give a FUCK what you jumped out of as long as you could jump! I trained from a C-182 and then started going to Skydive Dallas later, and fell in love with the Super Otter and Caravan! I have also jumped a CASA (among several other aircraft) and it rocks! So good on ya there! BUT...it is kind of fun to jump a C-182 after a long time away, because it is nostalgic, and you only have to worry about 3 other jumpers in the sky! hehe...sort of like, skydiving lite! hehe Anyway, don't knock it until you've tried it! I am a little pissy this evening, so I apologize for anyone I have offended (NOT!)

I took a whuffo ride in a Twin Otter, and didn't wear a chute. Neither did the pilot. Everyone who goes rightseating in our King Air has to wear one. I think the difference is the bulkhead separating the pilots from the "cabin" in the Otter. Someone alluded to that a while ago, but I'm too tired to go find that thread. It doesn't make much sense to me: is the bulkhead going to protect me in a crash? No. Will it prevent me from getting to the door? No. But I suppose it's something about the pilots being at least symbolically separated from the dangers of the jump operation aft of them.

I've dreamt that I was freeflying without a rig, and right when I got near the ground, I could look down at the sky between my legs and automatically pop up there. I've also had ones where I get into my dive under canopy, and the ground just keeps getting farther away. I stay in the dive and build up unbelievable speed. The ground stops, I swoop, and the swoop just keeps on going through neighborhoods and even inside restaurants and junk.

Laugh as you may...
As a kid I had this dream were I was by a lake nearby and the wind began to blow quite strong, it softly picked me up and I realized I could use my arms to navigate it, much like floating in a deep pool whith only your head above the water. At the time I knew nothing about skydiving.
During my training I remembered that dream and tears of joy clouded my eyes, I was realizing my dream. I always say that skydiver's don't fall but fly the wind. Maybe it's my memory playing tricks on me, but freefalling it's a lot like the feeling in the dream, since I can't fly by myself I navigate the wind with my body.
I pitty those who never experienced this joy and think that skydivers are self-destructive or stupid people. Many of them would be surprised to know that the guy who wrote John Livingston Seagull (Richard Bach) is (was?) an avid skydiver.
