pyke 0 #1 July 8, 2001 Okay, this is how shocking my social life is at the moment!!Last wednesday while at the dz, we watched the segment of the movie "Fandango" which deals with skydiving. That got me thinking..."how do all the movies that involve skydiving compare?"So, my exciting weekend consisted of doing absolutely nothing on friday except getting mildly buzzed and talking to the Sis for about 3 hours. Saturday the party happened!!!Having ABSOLUTELY no means of getting to the dz and being SO COMPLETELY BORED, I rented all the latest movies that deal with skydiving (namely Dropzone, Terminal Velocity, and Cutaway) and had a movie marathon!!! I am not going to tell anyone anything they don't already know, but I thought I would let you all know my opinion...since, you're here...you might as well have something to read right!!Dropzone - (2 stars - for the action) well, I had seen this before, but not as a skydiver, so the things I liked (note the sarcasm) were...how all the "reserves" that they used all had pilot chutes on them (what is wrong with this picture?)...how they could evidently dump in place with zero risk of collision (where is the separation people?) and then there is the obvious...how can you have (I counted) 5 full seconds of separation from a non-attached tandem passenger to the instructor...and still get him hooked up in the air and pull at a safe altitude?? Oh...and I also liked how all the tandems didn't ever use a drogue!! Overall, not bad for Guy Mano's first attempt at incorporating skydiving into Hollywood. Got some of the neatness of the sport involved. I want one of the suits used in the night jump!!Terminal Velocity - (CRAP!- 1/2 star) well, aside from the fact that Charlie Sheen is TOTALLY UNBELIEVABLE in the role...this movie concentrated on the russian mafia more than skydiving (big surprise there!!). Again, the skydiving was neat to watch, but only to a whuffo. I liked how a S/L student was able to disconnect herself from the 'dope rope', freefall, and deploy her chute. (I have figured out how she could pull the pin, but how in the hell(!) do you dump the lines?) Again, CRAP!!Which brings me to Guy's full attempt (wrote and directed it) at incorporating skydiving into Hollywood - Cutaway. (ABSOLUTE SHITE!! 2 stars - because it had more skydiving merits, but ZERO continuity) William Balwin was a waste in this role...Tom Berenger was the "iconoclastic" DZO/legend in the sport - WHATEVER!!!!(what was with the earring??)...Rodman was Rodman - totally ineffective...and whoever that chick is...well, you can tell I didn't even bother getting her name, so that is how good she was. I liked (again, note the sarcasm) how when he FIRST shows up to the dz, he looks up to see skydivers from the view of a skydiver(!)...I look up at my dz and I am lucky to spot the drogue...let alone see a head down formation! I want to know where my closing pin necklace was when I took my A test!!! And the chick wrapping her legs around me...I didn't get one. I especially liked how after a few hours in the wind tunnel...he is suddenly transformed into an ALL AROUND skydiver...doing CReW, Head down kiss passes, and belly flying pass over transitions. I still can't do any of it...and I have over 100 jumps!! I feel that Guy should have probably left the directing up to someone else...not that he didn't do an okay job...but just that his camera shots and subjects were a little off...and could have been done by someone with a bit more skill in the "hollywood" style pictures.anyway, if anyone is looking to KILL an evening by doing this marathon on their own...let me tell you now...it certainly would KILL an evening. Especially if you and your partner wanted to basically spend an evening watching the worst movies made on the sport and then getting into heated discussions on how fucked up they were!!!Let's hope my next weekend turns out to be better...and all weekends from here on...I don't know if I could stand another like this!!!!Hope everyone else's was a good one!!Kahurangi e Mahearangi,PykeNZPF A - 2584
pyke 0 #3 July 8, 2001 I don't deny that at all!! We don't care how we get them...just keep getting them!!Kahurangi e Mahearangi,PykeNZPF A - 2584
mountainman 0 #4 July 8, 2001 I agree with Spectre! There isn't very many ways for skydiving to get out to the public (for liking it OR trying it). I am just glad that there are some movies that take a stab at the Hollywood level. (Notice I said "take a stab".)Anyway, kudos to Guy for making something that we can watch on those days when Good Stuff has already been watched twice (today). Our humble corner on the web... what42 0 #5 July 8, 2001 QuoteAnd the chick wrapping her legs around me...I didn't get one. You didn't??? Here in the states everyone that learns to skydive gets one. And it's the girl that's supposed to give you the necklace. I guess since you learned in New Zealand they have different traditions. Oh, and it's Stephen Baldwin in Cutaway not William. I thought Cutaway was decent because of the large amounts of skydiving. It gives me something to feed my addiction when I can't be out at the dropzone. Terminal Velocity dissapointed me. Only a few small skydiving scenes.I'm glad these movies are out there though. Dropzone was what got me interested in Skydiving. I saw it 7 years ago and have wanted to skydive ever since. Without these movies a good number of the newer skydivers might not be in the sport.Wesley--I'll see you at 13,5 amongst the clouds.
pyke 0 #6 July 8, 2001 QuoteOh, and it's Stephen Baldwin in Cutaway not WilliamStephen, William, Alec, George, Fred, Charles, Barney, Dumbass...who cares!!!!And your girlfriend screwing your brains out just because she has done a tandem and knows why we do it....DOESN'T COUNT!!!! And, I haven't seen your necklace yet...so you must leave it at home for her to wear...and NOTHING else!Kahurangi e Mahearangi,PykeNZPF A - 2584
what42 0 #7 July 8, 2001 QuoteI haven't seen your necklace yet...so you must leave it at home for her to wear...and NOTHING else!Damn...it seems you've figured out that I was lying about getting a girl and a necklace when we learn to skydive. I guess it would be impossible anyway. There aren't enough female skydivers. It seems every load I look around and it's only men up there.Wesley--I'll see you at 13,5 amongst the clouds. pyke 0 #8 July 8, 2001 well hurry up and convince your g/f to take her AFF. That would increase our female population by 1/6, or is it 1/7?what is sad, is that when a friend of mine in NZ came back from holiday...she doubled the TOTAL female PRESENCE at the dz. That IS a SHAME!!!I support any woman's efforts to get more women in the sport (ie. Airann). Besides...I think the armed forces proved that ALL men in a single place can be rather boring...'cept if that is your idea of heaven!!!!anyway, CHICKS ROCK...let's get more in the sport. It increases my chances of finding dates!!!!!!Kahurangi e Mahearangi,PykeNZPF A - 2584
what42 0 #9 July 8, 2001 Quoteanyway, CHICKS ROCK...let's get more in the sport. It increases my chances of finding dates!!!!!! If that's your reason for bringing girls to skydiving why do you want me to get my gf to do it? Haha...it sure as hell wouldn't increase your date chances. (It better not anyway.) And I think adding one would increase by 1/8.Wesley--I'll see you at 13,5 amongst the clouds.

fizinjen 0 #11 July 9, 2001 Blaine and Wesley.....I am offended! BTW, If there were more decent and attractive hunks out at the dz, maybe more women would be attracted to sky diving. Who wants a guy whose only six pack is, the one he carries in his hands? huh? Beer guts don't stand a chance here babe! Edited by fizinjen on 7/8/01 09:17 PM. Emma 0 #12 July 9, 2001 Ah, nice post, Pyke, but you forgot POINT BREAK!The last time I saw that was about 5 years ago, long before my first skydive. Has anyone seen it from the perspective of a skydiver? I have a feeling it may disappoint a little now, although Patrick Swayze (skydiver in REAL LIFE and bit of a hunk although has slight ressemblance to a hamster) and Keanu (pretty and bimbo-ish enough to merit some appreciation) do have the edge on Wesley and the boyz.BTW, I especially liked the bit in Dropzone where they're calling out to each other in freefall...'Help! Over here!' Yeh, right. And how the hard-assed but tiny female DZO just picks up this massive tandem rig with one hand and chucks it on her shoulder...uh-huh..I couldn't even pick one up without serious injury!xxxxx
cyberskydive 0 #13 July 9, 2001 You should have stole yor sis's car keys pyke-LOLfor what it is Dropzone was a pretty good movie to me, at least it didnt have someone pound in the first scene, and it was about skydivi9ng pretty much the entire movie.C-28534http://www.sunraydesigns.com
Grogs 0 #14 July 9, 2001 Quotefor what it is Dropzone was a pretty good movie to me, at least it didnt have someone pound in the first scene, and it was about skydivi9ng pretty much the entire movie.I agree. I thought it actually was a pretty decent movie. You really do have to just accept the fact that most of the skydiving is quite unrealistic, but it actually has a pretty good plot and good action, unlike the other 2. Who is to say that someone with good looks and a nice personality isn't the very person who you jump with but may just not be "all that" to you...could be the best thing that ever happened to you, but you are too focused on stomachs and chests!!!!! Besides...after 30, isn't everyone a little more cushy than they ever were?and as far as beer guts go...I wouldn't consider mine a 6 pack...more like a 3 pack, but that is soon to change.Kahurangi e Mahearangi,PykeNZPF A - 2584
SkymonkeyONE 4 #16 July 9, 2001 Actually what it gets us is people who stroll up and think that they are just going to be able to strap on a rig and skydive. "Uh, what do you mean I will be hooked to the plane", or, "why do you have to hang on to me; I want to jump by myself." Just had one of those this past weekend. Funny. chuck

axe96bam 0 #21 July 9, 2001 I have seen the skydiving movies and don't really care that there are a bunch of little details missing, which only a skydiver could notice. What concerns me is that in all skydiving movies our sport is connected to something bad - drug smuggling, mafia, crime etc. I wish the skydiving movies would put our sport in a positive light and stop connecting us to crime. mouth 0 #22 July 9, 2001 Told ya you should have come down......this was all on Sat too so you just missed out. I love a super otter. Note to self: don't let Pyke get to you...he's just jealous since he didn't listen. FYI...Dan came down. Ask him about his night jumps.
freaksister 0 #23 July 9, 2001 Mouth, I am not sure what day I might make it out to Thomaston seeing as how I am visiting a friend in Athens, and leaving town on Friday, and haven't even left Texas yet! (bummer) I plan to drive it all in one go if possible, I caught up on my sleep last night after I got home from the DZ (2 AM) so we'll see! I would say Thursday sounds good...I would like to jump at Thomaston at least while I am there, since I have jumped at ASC and at Monroe already. Sis It isn't brave if you aren't scared...
