zelda 0 #11 June 11, 2001 QuoteYep, this site pretty much does have it all!Except "line dump." I saw this on the wreck this morning, and am now feeling very ignorant...anyone know what this is?-zelda
Zennie 0 #12 June 11, 2001 Funny you mention this. I was just researching it the other day.Someone correct me if I'm wrong but this is basically my understanding....Many people stow their lines they use rubber bands that are too loose, or they make their stows too short.During deployment, as the bag is pulled from the container, the lines all free from their stows simultaneously, and the chute exits the bag and begins inflating. The lines have all "dumped" from their stows, rather than popping out stow-by-stow as they should. So what you have is a canopy beginning to open (or largely open) before you've even reached line stretch. So you can imagine what awaits you when you reach line strech... **WHAM!**This is one of the causes of really brutal openings. So the lesson to take from it is:1. Make sure you use bands of the proper tightness.2. Make sure your stows are about 2-3 inches long.------------Blue Skies!Zennie

GeekStreak 0 #14 June 11, 2001 Since we're having a vocabulary lesson , Would somebody please define 'snivel'.TIA1111,GeekStreak
SpeedRacer 1 #15 June 11, 2001 a Snivel is the opposite of the effect described above: A snivel is when your parachute opens very slowly. This can be caused by a slider not coming down all the way (in which case you pump the brakes) or it can be caused by other things as well, such as a very old canopy that has become too porous. If your canpoy snivels, don't roll the nose.Speed Racer"De plaene!! De plaene!!"

lewmonst 0 #17 June 11, 2001 everyone... if you jump you should make a huge effort to understand all these terms, how to recognize them, how to prevent them (the bad ones) and how to handle them... seriously. put a practice rig on, and have someone throw the malfunction 8x10 photos over your head... remeber about the 5 seconds you have to make a decision... know what you're looking at and practice until it's instinctual how to react, 3 pulls on the main, cut, pump brakes, kick out, no cut, pull reserve, whichever... and in the air, you won't be sitting still under the image of those malfunction photos, you'll be tossed all over the place...just a thought, blew skies, pull high, not too high, don't forget your chest strap, love your rigger, tip you packer, track far far away, and geek the camera, ask more questions, smile get a pincheck, left hand landing pattern, if you have a double total, track for your riggerlew
