sinister69 0 #1 July 1, 2001 Hello all,Am writing this today, the day after completion of AFF, because I just did 4 solo dives today. My first two dives went great!! Had a blast just tracking back and forth, turning and enjoying the view.My third dive was another matter. I exited the plane with a good floating exit. Everything went great till opening altitude. At 4500' I waved off and started my pull, then all hell broke lose!! I musta brought my legs in or something cause all of a sudden I started heading down feet first. Well by this time my pilot chute was already out and somehow it wrapped around my leg and then suddenly I was yanked upside down. (thinking to myself OH SHIT!) Well, I kicked my leg out and the PC came undone and I was yanked hard upright. (Ouch that Hurt!) (Also thinking Thank God my chute is out!!!) Seeing as how I was unstable on opening, I had major line twist. Grabbed the risers and pulled, kicked my way out and did Canopy Control Check. Everything worked fine and had a great landing 22 meters from target center. This was my first "malfunction" even though it was my fault. But it scared the hell out of me. Well, I still had one jump ticket left, so I went and jumped in the pool, cooled off, then manifested again.ALOT nervous on the ride to altitude!!!! Last one out, did a nice diving exit. Since last ride went bad on the pull, decided to do some practice pulls and stay stable. Got those done okay with no problems, so I just sat in my column of air and did some lazy turns. Got to pull altitude, took my time, nice smooth pull and no problems. BTW, my other 3 landings were great standup ones. This landing came in a little too fast and didn't flare in time so I PLF'd. I am still here, learned a lesson from that third dive. Keep yourself in a stable position like you were taught and you will do okay.Would like to thank everyone at the Perris DZ who helped me out and gave me pointers on having a good dive. Thanks all and Blue Skies!!!!!Nelson

DiverDave 0 #6 July 1, 2001 Hey Sinister69!Glad you worked out that situation, didn't sound like fun. One thing I did on my solos after AFF was to add a specific 'arch' step into my break-off routine. Since its good to build good habits, at break-off altitude I would always turn to a heading perpendicular to jumprun, track for 5 seconds (even though these were solos), then focus on a very stable arch before and during my wave off and pull. This focus on arching hard, with arms and legs spread wide, helped to shake off any instability from trying new things during the skydive, and also established a very symmetrical (read: no line twists) body position for deployment.Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you were able to shake that pilot chute loose... as to your opening, under the circumstances I'd say it went great :)Just goes to show, today's canopies want to open, despite our efforts to the contrary :)So, hurry up and get your A license so we can jump together!Cheers...
