mattb 0 #1 April 11, 2001 I only got two jumps in last weekend but I think the story is still worth sharing - In Chicago the weather forecast was anyone's guess - it was supposed to be warm but might be stormy and might be windy. I'm extremely anxious because the equipment Iordered in late November has finally all arrived - for the first time ever I won't have to rent gear.Friday night I am at my girlfriend's house when her dad called - he no longer has a place to store his camper and wants to know if we'll take it to the dropzone for the summer. Yes I'm serious - this wasn't totally out of the blue but we had been wondering / waiting for sometime to see if this was going to happen.Saturday morning comes and the winds are going between 30 and 60 mph. With jumping out of the question we decide to spend the day cleaning the camper and testing everything out. We end up agreeing to purchase the trailer for a nominal fee so we have less to worry about. A trip to Home Depot and Kmart and enough supplies are purchased so that the standard of living is acceptible to Lori.Sunday comes and the weather is beautiful - 70 degrees and sunny with low winds. The dropzone is flooded (a couple of hours to get on a load!) but it is good to see all faces there at the same time instead of the random appearances during the winter months. I get my new rig and jump it twice - a fun 2-way docked sit dive and a solo just to play around. We have to leave early because life is complicated and other responsiblities called but after months of waiting I have my own gear and as an added bonus a trailer to call my summer home. Now if I could just get the *#$@!$#@in canopy into the bag!Smiling and broke after buying a rig and a camper,-mobps - for those who know me Lori would appreciate if the "thing that can be lived in and towed behind my truck" is called a camper or weekend home and not a trailer. HopnPop 0 #3 April 11, 2001 Hey Matt,I think it is official, you are now skydiving trailer trash. So… when are quitting your job as programmer and starting your new job as packer? Lori can work in the manifest or become a hangar master. I can only dream that one of these days I will have a trailer at the DZ that I can call my own. I did not go to SDC last Sunday but I did go to Morris. I made 4 jumps, could have made more but I had a cutaway on my 3rd jump. If you are going to be at the DZ this weekend I can show you an easy way to pack that new Saphire.Leo
Greg 0 #4 April 11, 2001 That is AWESOME!!! A "mobile pad" right at the dz, I would be stoked too. If it were me, I would be awlful tempted to just give up my apt and move permanantly to the dz. I can kind of relate, in July last year I broke down and picked up a used rig, and just last week, kinda out of the blue, broke down and picked up a brand new truck. (used rig, brand new truck, what am I thinking!)Anyway, congrats, hope the winds are better this weekend (for both of us).Blue ones!!Greg A-37958
Slowfaller 0 #5 April 11, 2001 QuoteI made 4 jumps, could have made more but I had a cutaway on my 3rd jump.So were you the camera guy w/ the line twists?? I was up at morris for about twenty minutes on sunday. No jumps though, they did not have a rig I could use. Except a 210 or some ridiculously huge canopy. Anyway I went up to sdc where there is always a rig I can rent.blue skies, cold beerchris
mattb 0 #6 April 11, 2001 Leo I won't be there this weekend - Easter is in Minnesota this year. If Skydive Twin Cities is open yet I'm stopping on the way to my folks house. I'll be there in 2 weeks. Any packing tips appreciated - after about 10 tries I finally got it in the bag before work this morning in a condition that I would jump it. Somebody mentioned psycho-packing it and I looked at Precision's website for instructions and I may try that. What happened on your third jump?-mobps - I had to promise Lori that I would keep a real job in order for her to approve of the trailer. mattb 0 #7 April 11, 2001 Chris,The rig is a Wings container with a Safire and PD Reserve. I wasn't on either of those loads - I left early, around load 12.-mob
HopnPop 0 #8 April 11, 2001 Chris,I don’t think that was me (I don’t have a camera). I had my cutaway around 1pm, what time did you get there? After I had my cutaway I tried to rent a rig but the only thing they had was a PD 210. I am used to jumping my Spinletto 135 and I really did not want to pay $35 for something as old and heavy as a PD 210. Luckily Kris Bagwell had a spare rig with a Saber 150 in it. Nice canopy but for some reason it opened really hard (my back is still sore).
HopnPop 0 #9 April 11, 2001 Matt,Psycho-packing works great, that was actually the method I was going to show you.I don’t know exactly what happened to my main but I think I misrouted my right break line. As soon as I deployed the canopy went into a fast left dive. I tried to stop the dive by pulling on my right riser but that did not help much. I was loosing altitude fast so I just chopped the sucker.
Slowfaller 0 #10 April 11, 2001 Leo,im probably wrong then, i dunno where i got camera guy from. I was there at about 1pm and gone by 1:20pm. Did somebody call 911 thinking your main was you? It was a line twist mal right?
HopnPop 0 #11 April 11, 2001 ChrisSome guy was driving by and saw my main come down. I think he called 911 thinking that some one burned in. 5 minutes after I land I see a cop and an ambulance pull up to the side of the road. I figured that they were probably here for me, so I started walking towards the cop’s car. As soon as the cop sees me he starts yelling “Are you the guy that landed without a parachute?” and I am thinking, hey moron, do you really think I would be walking right now if I landed without a parachute.Edited by hopnpop on 4/11/01 06:39 PM.
