Wing Loading

Recommended Posts

Sigh. He's been in the forum for 12 whole days.

Rich, welcome to the forum.

Take your naked weight in pounds. To that, add about 20 - 25 pounds for the weight of your rig 7 clothing. That's your exit (or "out the door" weight). Then divide your exit weight by the square footage of your canopy. That's your wingloading for that canopy.

Example # 1.
Naked weight 150 lbs + rig & clothing weight 23 lbs = exit weight 173 lbs.
Canopy size is 150 sq. ft. So:
173 / 150 = 1.153
So your wingloading would be about 1.153 to 1, expressed as 1.153 : 1, but colloquially referred to as "about 1.15"

Example #2
Same person, except now he's jumping a 230 sq. ft canopy
170 / 230 = 0.739, or a wingloading of "about 0.74".
