Gender discrimination

Recommended Posts

This is an offshoot of the "different prices for different genders" thread in the women's forum (link here. Since we specialize in the beating of dead horses here, I thought it'd be good fun to drag out yet another.

Where there are, in fact, inequalities like the number of folks of different genders in skydiving, is this a good way for a business owner to attract a clientele he wants?

Obviously it's his or her business...

If you're a guy and just want more women at the drop zone, consider, then, the possibility of, say, a nursing program charging less for men because of a critical shortage of men in a local nursing market?

It's a fun horse to beat...

It's already being beaten here in Speakers Corner. Check this thread.

Seeing as your opinion seems not to coincide with a number of new threads here, and you didn't know this post already existed, have you bothered to check in at Speakers Corner at all?

omg, do we really need another thread about this? This is ridiculous! And what I don't understand is why it's only an issue with the women. Only women are getting pissed about the lower lift ticket... not the men. They're the ones paying more money after all... :S

Okay, to take this a little further than the DZ and answer the question of "is this a good way for a business owner to attract a clientele he wants?"

One answer that is the perfect example: Hooters.

Hooters has a desired image and that image is pretty much accepted by most. It's not a lascivious place, lots of families go there too.

Here's another answer that's a good example: Chipindales (sp?)

I see nothing wrong with preferential treatment of one gender over the other in specific situations. In my opinion, the entire movement of achieving absolute "equality" among the "sexes" has done more harm than good.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

No, that's whether anything resembling what someone could consider T&A is demeaning to women, which is, if you care, different from whether preferential pricing is OK. Really.

I don't really care about the finer points of whether a weapon is considered an assault weapon, but I seem to be able to avoid the gratuitous bashes.

Is that because I disagree with you on some issues? I've posted in speaker's corner, so it should be pretty clear that I'm aware of its existence.

That's what I get for having the afternoon off and spending it in front of the computer....HA!!! KARMA in action....get lazy and this is what happens! Maybe I'll consider it mental stimulation and trick myself into thinking I've been an integral part of something(???) productive....it's all in the twist you put on it.

Hey quickdraw, that thread isn't the same topic. Before you insult Wendy, maybe you should click on her link & see where this stemmed from.

Why isn't the discount that you're talking about for training instead of jump tickets. I still support it. I'd like to see more women in the sport all togather though.

My DZ has (unfortunately) few women:( And one of them is my sister, most of the others are married. I would really support any way to get more women there. girls are fun and bring more atmosphere to a dz.

When I went to nursing school, there was a state financial aid program available to women who wanted to attend nursing school. I paid full price as the state funded program excluded men from eligibility.

Discrimination based on gender harms us all.

Any time you can switch the words (switch 'man' for 'woman' or 'black' with 'white') and it seems unfair, it likely is wrong. Anything else is hypocrisy.

Edit: and certainly beating any animal, a horse for example, sends the wrong message. But if it's dead, then the beating might just be considered tenderizing.

May I have you attention Please!!! . . . Thank you.

As rehmwa(wtf is a rehmwa anyway) so delicately put it "think of the children."

Question though - agreeing with you Wendy -(shhh Don't tell anyone) that this is all about marketing - and sales and personal gain - it is a buisness after all.

So all that aside - is it "Right"?

I had to NOT jump on Sunday because finances would not permit it.
If I were in Georgia, and I had an "Inny" instead of an "OUTTY", I would have been able to jump 3 times on Sunday for the same money.

So I ask you . . .

Would it be "right" to sell a cookie to a black person for a penny and a white person for a dollar?

Would it be "The right thing to do" pay a woman less just because she's a woman?

What about letting people with a certain name eat only twice a day, instead of three.

Is it showing good moral fortitude to finish before she does in bed?

I mean COME ON! Where does the injustice STOP?

And does it, pehaps show just a wee bit of "prejudice" to not demand an organized naked jump for all this cost savings.(Don't forget video)

We aren't talking about wether it is accepted or even if it's petty - What we want to know is - IS IT POLITICALLY CORRECT! Or is political correctness subject to convienience?

You won't hear this often, so everybody be sure to gloat.

...ahem...

I am sorry. I was wrong.

I read the thread she was posting about a while ago at the bonfire (I stopped when it got ridiculous). I remembered it as a silly ass thread concerning offended feminists. I remembered a a silly ass thread concerning offended feminists being moved here to speakers corner recently. I confused the two.

I also wrongly took out frustration with certain other posters on Wendy because I wrongly believed she fit the group. I'm taking some time off (dz.com and the computer in general). Hopefully everyone will be calmer when I return. I know I will.

I just found it very interesting and ironic, that the ones that were complaining about the "discrimination" were women who were given a break in this case. And then, when they didn't like the "discrimination" they promptly took their issues to the "WOMEN ONLY" Forum!!!!! Are you kidding me??!! What hypocrisy!

Anyway, I have neither a problem with the offer from the DZ or the Women Only Forum. Big deal, as many have pointed out, women consistently pay more for things such as haircuts. Do we consider this unfair? Women have always been paid less for the same job in the US. This is an issue. Think of the DZ giving a break based on this and evening it out just a little.

And if you still have a problem, and insist on paying the same as the men, pay the extra damn four dollars. I am certain the DZ would be more than happy to take your generous donation.

Finally, people taking stands on trivial issues such as this prevent progress in issues that really matter, such as the aforementioned, disparity in pay between men and women.

Why? Because they turn people off what matters by fussing over what doesn't! It's very easy to lose support for one issue by overplaying another.

Of course, some people just don't know how to pick their battles and feel they must stand on every issue. Oh, well.

BTW....this is the speaker's corner, right?

While this may be true, I wanted to see how other women felt about being treated differently. Regardless of the fact that we were being charged less.

I have given thought prior to this about the "Women only " forum. Especially while Talkback was down and the women's forum was still up and running, even though it is a bit of a talkback forum. I do not necessarily think it is right to have a Women's forum here, but I am not sure of how many women view this forum and wanted to get their input.

a) I addressed the haircut argument already. Women choose to pay more for haircuts. Any woman can walk into Supercuts and get a 10$ haircut (I do it, so I know it can be done), they simply choose to get a better haircut for 55$ instead of risking looking bad and paying 40$ less. Your skydive will be no better than my skydive which is 4$ less, we would be jumping from the same plane, landing on the same grass, I don't see how this relates with choosing a haircuttery.

b) As far as women being payed less than men... we are coming up. It is evening itself out. I do not need men subsidizing my jumps!

That has got to be the most ridiculous argument i've heard. Yes, I could donate to the dropzone. But, that does not change the fact that they discriminate based on sex at that dropzone.

People can spend their time arguing any topic they please. I have seen far more ridiculous matters discussed. I think that the issue of discrimination in a sport I partake in is an important one. There is no reason that should bother you.

Of course, some people just don't know how to pick their battles and feel they must stand on every issue. Oh, well.

And, other people don't know how to respect the opinions of people around them. Just because you do not feel this is a worthwhile fight, does not mean that it is not. There is no reason for you to be upset because I (and many other women and men on these forums) do feel it is an issue worth debate.

Angela.

Well, I'm not gonna cut and paste all that in the interest of making the post a little shorter....but....

Discrimination at the drop zone....ok, if that's what you want to call it. I agree that it certainly meets the criteria. There are also many, many men's and women's clubs that discriminate based on sex.....to the point of disclusion. This is not disclusion, merely different prices.

And as said before, many clubs do the same thing. Many, many clubs offer free admission to women always, not just on ladies night. Is this wrong? I don't think so, it's a marketing strategy.

I've clearly stated in the other thread, that if you don't like it, you have the option, as the consumer, to not go there. I also clearly stated that if this is an issue that you wish to make a stand on, so be it. I clearly respect your opinion and right to do so, I merely disagree with it.

I am not nor will I ever be upset by people taking a stand on this issue. I think it's trivial. But if you do, fine, I have no problem with that. I stated that I think it detracts from other, more important issues.

So, based on the fact that I've very clearly stated that if someone decides to take a stand on it, by all means, do so. And the fact that I've even offered options to those that feel this way....how do you feel I don't respect your opinion? Because I disagree? Because I think moral stands are better spent on other issues? I stick to that, but if this is the proverbial sword you are willing to fall on, fine, I have no problem with that.

Like I said, I'm not upset, nor will I be. It has become quite a fun debate though.

I think this is a storm in a tea cup.
I think people should have right to charge whatever they want and issue discounts on their own whim or judgement.
Cheap tandems for dads on father's day...Discrimination against orphans.
Cheap jumps for vets on Veterans day....Discrimination against conscientious objectors.
;);)
Seriously, the owner of the DZ surely has the right to provide whatever discounts he sees fit, its his business and its a free market economy. If you don't like the way he/she does business, go jump somewhere else.

I think if this is the most important thing we have to be concerned about, we're very lucky. I'm saying that as a woman who considers herself to be a feminist.

There are bigger issues than the perceived equality or inequality of women as exemplified by this. Unequal wages, the fact that behavior that's "good for business" and "hard-driving" is a "stone cold bitch" if seen in a woman; stuff like that.

Some of the wage inequity comes from more women taking advantage of part-time rules to take time off and raise families -- part-timers don't advance as fast. For that matter, full-timers often don't advance as fast as over-timers.

Gender violence, favoritism in child custody, and people of both genders who want everyone else to fit into their preconceptions are a bigger problem.

Yep, and I would. We are not talking about putting the price up for certain groups, we are talking about price reductions for certain groups.
I hold that the DZO has the right to fix whatever price structure he wishes, our right as consumers is whether or not provide him with our business, it really is that simple.

"I think if this is the most important thing we have to be concerned about, we're very lucky."
Absolutely.

I work in petrochemical engineering, primarily in the North Sea, and a male dominated, testosterone charge work envirnment. I currently work for a woman who is our department head. She is the second female department head I have worked for. I hold that for females to reach an equal position as men in this particular industry, they have to be better engineers than their male counterparts, by a long shot.
And there is no real excuse for wage inequity, not in my experience anyways.
