TypicalFish 0 #1 May 7, 2004 Honestly; what would you do? So much has been made as of late of both Kerry's and the Bush Administration's Vietnam service record (the relevancy of this issue is NOT the point of this thread); I am curious to know everyone's take on it. Hypothetical scenario; we can't extract ourselves from the situation in Iraq, and it has grown larger and bloodier, a draft is institiuted, and you are eligible and likely to go. Do you volunteer? Do you skip happily off to war if called with no question? Investigate possible options for deferments and accept one if it is available? Look for a loophole to legally avoid it? Or dodge it completely by going to Canada? Be honest, no judgement here, what would you do?"I gargle no man's balls..." ussfpa on SOCNET

quade 4 #4 May 7, 2004 When I was growing up this wasn't a hypothetical question. Fortunately for me, Nixon ended the draft a couple of months before I would have been required to register. Had he not, I would have gone into the service. I had already gotten quite a bit of information from recruiters and been a member of a JROTC type program for several years, so I already had several glimpses into what I wanted to do including a couple of weeks in San Diego and a "cruise" to Hawaii. Most young men facing the draft at that time had given it at least some thought and had made plans in order to make the transition as painless as possible all things considered for them. When the draft ended, most folks dropped those plans in favor of private sector career paths.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

billvon 3,033 #8 May 7, 2004 >Honestly; what would you do? May not be such a hypothetical question: ---------------------------------------------- U.S. eyes proposal to draft women Toronto Star WASHINGTON—The chief of the U.S. Selective Service System has proposed registering women for the military draft and requiring that young Americans regularly inform the government about whether they have training in niche specialties needed in the armed services. The proposal, which the agency's acting director Lewis Brodsky presented to senior Pentagon officials just before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, also seeks to extend the age of draft registration to 34, up from 25. The issue of a renewed draft has gained attention because of concern that U.S. military forces are stretched thin because of worldwide commitments. --------------------------------------------- But to answer it - if I was of the age to be drafted, I'd register and go if called. I have a feeling that I would end up being deferred in that case because I'm working on a few military contracts now, and it's likely that the military would rather have me design stuff for them than carry a rifle. But that would be up to them.

JohnRich 4 #17 May 7, 2004 QuoteHonestly; what would you do? Been there, done that. 1972 - I received my notice to report for duty (attached). It was one week after the birth of my first son. I got a six-month deferment to get my affairs in order, and figure out how to take care of my wife and baby while I was gone (free trailer from brother in-law). I recognized that I might be sent to 'Nam, killed, and my baby could grow up never knowing his father. Then it was off to boot camp. Those were scary times. Your draft number determined your future... I was one of the lucky ones. The closest I got was Japan.
ThighMan 5 #18 May 7, 2004 To Draft or not to draft, that is the question. I hope we never have to go to a draft. After almost 20 years it is time to let the younger people (guys and galls) take over. I would not wait for the draft. I enlisted right out of high school. Worked the summer and entered in November.Airborne Blue Skies, No Wind Feet and Knees Together
Kennedy 0 #19 May 7, 2004 I'm already registered for the selective service, and have been since 18, as all American males are supposed to. If things were bad enough the a draft were instituted, I would apply to OCS for the USMC. If it were instituted only because of a lack of volunteer troops, I wouldn't change anything.witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
PhillyKev 0 #20 May 7, 2004 QuoteC'mon; I was SERIOUS about this thread. I really wanted to gather some opinions... Ok, seriously then... if your in a situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them. And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement.
