Libya Severs Trade with N. Korea, Syria, Iran

Recommended Posts

Story Here. It's an AP article.

There has been a huge amount of progress in the past few years with Libya. This is a tangible, measurable result of a combination of our efforts in the middle east in my opinion (including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq).
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

It -may- be because of our current foriegn policy, or it may be because Libya needs the money and has finally come to the conclusion that it's more profitable to not be assholes.

Well, no matter what you want to attribute it to, it's a good thing -- probably the best thing that has happened in a while on the international scene.

Ummm, sanctions were suspended against Libya in 1999 when they handed over the Lockerbie bombers. It was the US And UK that continued sanctions until the completion of the trial.

The progress in Libya is a tangible, measurable result of the effect of UN sanctions and Libya's desire to come out from under those sanctions.

The UN had sh*t to do with this. It was Libya that approached the UK and US. They didn't come to the UN.

"Within months after September 11th, we had the Libyans, the Syrians and the Iranians all coming to us saying, 'What can we do [to better relations]?' We didn't really engage any of them, because we decided to do Iraq. We really squandered two years of capital that will make it harder to apply this model to the hard cases like Iran and Syria," said Flynt Leverett, a former Bush administration National Security Council staff member now at the Brookings Institution.

Libya initiated negotiations regarding their WMD program in 2001, but we ignored them and went after Iraq instead. Otherwise they probably would have disarmed earlier.

Libya has been trying to rejoin the rest of the world for a while now. The Lockerbie trial was a huge step forward and that progress has been built on. Negotiations into the PC Fletcher shooting have also progressed and neither issue had anything to do with Iraq.

The climate was right for change after those steps and that's why I think it happened. You can only fight so many wars at once after all and there are already warnings of overstretch so I don't think that it was done out of fear of invasion. I do think that Libya wanted to distance itself from the events of 9/11 as it had made progress in returning to the world community and didn't wish to be associated with those events.
