Was it important to mention that he was black?

Quote

You're right, I don't know who else was or wasn't searched.

Important? No. Unimportant? Maybe not....

If the young man was singled out because he was black, then it's a shame how much further we still need to go...

But then if he wasn't singled out that way, then it certainly makes you think that maybe the Herald singled out that picture to publish... Newspapers like that have hundreds of photos per day to choose from, maybe thousands. Why that one? Especially if the others in the photo were not black. Maybe innocent? Maybe not...

Or maybe someone actually didn't see color and picked the photo for some other reason.

The photo shows the cop prying into a medium sized black duffel bag of a 20-something black male -- the only black in view in the photo, of 7 or 8 discernible passengers.

This would be a prime example of racial profiling that is most definitely OUT of bounds.

The race of the guy is a red herring, actually. I guess I used it to inflame my rhetoric about my outrage. The problem is with searching people without probable cause in general. This is an outrage. I don't give a rat's ass that the convention is in town -- Democrat, Rebublican -- shit, even if it were the Libertarians. No one's protection is worth sacrificing our essential liberties -- and freedom from warrantless searches is high among them.

Can I get an Amen?

Amen. Our enemies want us to lose our freedoms, and they're happier if we take them away from ourselves; insult to injury.

Do... uh, do I have to give an "Amen" if I'm the guy who wrote it originally? I'm, umm, not sure how this works. And does it count if I'm an atheist? :S

Amen anyway.

And all in the name of protecting the Democratic fuckin' National Convention! Oh, the irony! :S

No worries, I'm Agnostic.

So when folks sneeze, instead of saying "God bless you" I say...

"Agnostic recognition of your sneeze" :S

(actually my BASE mentor gave me that one lol)

Why are they searching the belongings of people just for being near the convention. Was this guy trying to get INTO the convention? No. He's on a TRAIN. Are civil rights suspended within a certain perimeter of a Democratic Convention? Are there signs up to notify the public of this?

OK Jeff, are now starting to see what some of us are becoming very concerned about?

Just so long as they don't find the BASE rigs.

I've worked with Cruella de Vil.
I've broken bread with Cruella de Vil.
I've . . . I better stop here . . . just suffice it to say that I -know- Cruella de Vil.

Anyway, Ms. Heinz is NO Cruella. (not by a long shot)

Quade, I applaud you for defending your friend, Cruella, in the face of such harsh criticism. I'd have stood up for her, too, if one of my friends was compared to Theresa Heinz. :P

I am not religious in the slightest, but I am wondering if anyone saw the irony of a violinist playing "Amazing Grace". There was no formal person assigned to sing the words, but some people did.

If someone had sang the words, would that have caused the "you are forcing religion on us" backlash. Like "In God We Trust" on the money? Or the Pledge of Allegiance BS?

Aren't the Rep always accused of being a tool of the religious right?

Nice touch though. Aging baby-boomers with lighters like they were at a rock concert of their youth. What's next, a Fleetwood Mac song? ;)

You bastard, you just made me sing the whole song to myself.:S Anyway, if I remembered all the lyrics correctly, God is never mentioned...just assumed. I think the Dems were referring to Hillary and Bill and their "amazing grace.";)

Missed that, but I'm sure a bunch or hard-core right-wingers' heads exploded when they sang the national anthem in Native American. :D

It's good that the Indians are now assimilating into American culture. People that don't like American culture should go back to their own country. ;)

Hey, ya didn't happen to catch the Ron Reagan Jr. speech did ya?

Nicely done.

I was very impressed by Ron Jr.'s speech.

I liked Obama's too, until he started talking about God. But I think we're a long way off from having political leaders who don't mention God, so I guess I should just get over it...

Teresa's speech was interesting, though I got distracted and wasn't able to listen to it as closely as I wanted to.

Oh, and... Nice dalmation award, quade. :)

As if that were some sort of desirable goal . . .

Ever notice how liberals are so very tolerant . . . long as your views coincide with theirs?

Were they trying to force their religious beliefs and morality down your throat? Thought not.

THAT, my friend, is the difference.

There is a difference between "mentioning" God and shoving him down our throats. I am opposed to the latter, but not offended by the former.

Some people are offended by any mention of God, which is a great example of intolerance by certain segments of the big rainbow party. ;)

Well, if you did not believe in God then you would probably feel the same way.

I have given this a lot of thought, and I can understand that if a political leader truly believes in God then they probably feel it is their duty to mention God in public speeches and even involve God in their important decisions. I understand where they are coming from, and I can tolerate it to some extent...

But imagine if a Muslim was elected President, and his/her speeches often made reference to Allah. Or a Wiccan was made President and often referred to the Goddess. Obviously this is just an example, as neither situation is likely to happen anytime soon, but assuming it did happen... How would you feel about it then? Are you only tolerant of it now because you believe in the same God? Or would you still be tolerant of religion mixed with politics if suddenly the religion involved a different god than what you believe in?

People believe what they want to believe - hence - freedom of religion - I could really care less what you or anyone else believe in as long as it is not harming me or my way of life.

I may disagree with and vote differently for the candidate based on his or her religion - but I am not going to go off and scream and yell and tell them that they cannot do certain things in certain places - again - as long as it doesn't interfere with my health, security, or way of life.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama
