IQ scores of US presidents - past and present

Report: President Bush Has Lowest IQ of all Presidents of past 50 Years
This is from The Pennsylvania Court Observer
University Notes
Contributors: Cristina L. Brenstein, Lana Taamar

If late night TV comedy is an indicator, then there has never been as widespread a perception that a president is not intellectually qualified for the position he holds as there is with President G W Bush.

In a report published Monday, the Lovenstein Institute of Scranton, Pennsylvania detailed its findings of a four month study of the intelligence quotient of President George W. Bush. Since 1973, the Lovenstein Institute has published its research to the education community on each new president, which includes the famous "IQ" report among others.

According to statements in the report, there have been twelve presidents over the past 50 years, from F.D. Roosevelt to G. W. Bush who were all rated based on scholarly achievements, writings that they alone produced without aid of staff, their ability to speak with clarity, and several other psychological factors which were then scored in the Swanson/Crain system of intelligence ranking.

The study determined the following IQs of each president as accurate to within five percentage points:

147 Franklin D. Roosevelt (D)
132 Harry Truman (D)
122 Dwight D. Eisenhower (R)
174 John F. Kennedy (D)
126 Lyndon B. Johnson (D)
155 Richard M. Nixon (R)
121 Gerald Ford (R)
175 James E. Carter (D)
105 Ronald Reagan (R)
098 George HW Bush (R)
182 William J. Clinton (D)
091 George W. Bush (R)

The six Republican presidents of the past 50 years had an average IQ of 115.5, with President Nixon having the highest IQ, at 155. President G. W. Bush was rated the lowest of all the Republicans with an IQ of 91.

The six Democrat presidents had IQs with an average of 156, with President Clinton having the highest IQ, at 182. President Lyndon B. Johnson was rated the lowest of all the Democrats with an IQ of 126. No president other than Carter (D) has released his actual IQ, 176.

Among comments made concerning the specific testing of President GW Bush, his low ratings were due to his apparent difficulty to command the English language in public statements, his limited use of vocabulary (6,500 words for Bush versus an average of 11,000 words for other presidents), his lack of scholarly achievements other than a basic MBA, and an absence of any body of work which could be studied on an intellectual basis. The complete report documents the methods and procedures used to arrive at these ratings, including depth of sentence structure and voice stress confidence analysis.

"All the Presidents prior to George W. Bush had a least one book under their belt, and most had written several white papers during their education or early careers. Not so with President Bush," Dr. Lovenstein said. "He has no published works or writings, so in many ways that made it more difficult to arrive at an assessment. We had to rely more heavily on transcripts of his unscripted public speaking."

The Lovenstein Institute of Scranton Pennsylvania think tank includes high caliber historians, psychiatrists, sociologists, scientists in human behavior, and psychologists. Among their ranks are Dr. Werner R. Lovenstein, world-renowned sociologist, and Professor Patricia F. Dilliams, a world-respected psychiatrist.

This study was commissioned on February 13, 2001 and released on July 9, 2001 to subscribing member universities and organizations within the education community

So they go to say that they are unable to judge Bush on the same criteria that they used for the others...

Lets see different information, different sources....But you can campare them?

NOT.

Besides while I could buy Carter as a smart man, Clinton...Come on.

And Ronnie was 105? Please.

So let me get this part right....They commissioned this and delivered it while "W" was only in the WH 9 mths?

So:
A. They had at least 4 years of the guy being President for eveyone, but only 9 mths TOPS for Bush?

B. This was commissioned right after Bush took office?...Anyone else think this was politically motivated? Anyone, anyone...Buller?

Edit to add...I see it has been snoped already...

This is funny. Even if the story is a hoax, anyone with a grasp of "IQs" would take issue with these numbers.

Bill Clinton had an IQ of 182? Linus Pauling was "rumored" to have an IQ of 170. (On a sidenote, Linus Pauling was prevented by the US State Dept. from traveling to England to look at Watson and Crick's crystalographs, and many think he would have discovered the helix before they did.)

Pascal's was estimated at a 173 (yeah, Nixon was better than that?)

Or Newton, the credited discoverer of calculus? 168. Nixon was more intelligent?

DaVinci? Estimated at 158.

Actually, here's a question for Professor Kallend. How many Ph.D.'s are there for people who seem to be utter idiots? Surely you've personally born witness to some real savants...

When I looked at the scores I knew this couldn't be legit. Somebody obviously doesn't understand how insanely high those numbers are.

Here's a list of IQ scores and their occurrence percentages.

135 is 99th percentile, just to give you an idea.

DaVinci? Estimated at 158.

I've also seen estimates as high as 220.

Da Vinci estimates are all over the place, but in my mind, given everything he accomplished is probably the smartest person to walk the earth. YMMV

Yeah, the first time I looked at it I thought that 91 was WAY too high for BushB|

Seriously, though, it's pretty funny that someone who would go to the trouble of registering a domain name and creating a website just to back up his hoax would use numbers that high.

Like Lawrocket said - Nixon, higher IQ than Pascal? I'm thinkin' . . . . . NOT;)

Hell yeah, that man was insanely smart. Did anyone catch that IMAX film in which some skydivers built his pyramid canopy and it freaking worked. I think it was called Into the Extreme.

They had that on the Discovery Channel a while back I believe - I missed it but I did hear that the rig they built worked quite well - amazing, ain't it?

It's Adrenaline Rush: The Science of Risk. Yah, it was pretty cool that it "flew," but I wonder how that thing would "land." Don't think that the passenger would have walked away if he had landed DaVinci's canopy.

Hmm, I thought we were in Speakers Corner and not General Skydiving Discussions! :P :D

Yeah it is. It was a pyramid, when I saw it on IMAX I was blown away that it freaking worked. Kindof makes me want to start a poll. Smartet human being that ever lived. I'd say its a close call between Archemides and DaVinci.

I knew the story was liberal bullshit without going to Snopes or other worthless websites people go to pretend they're getting the facts. How?

Clinton with the highest and Bush with the lowest. Too much coincidence.

And LawRocket is right about IQs. Too many people aren't aware of how rare it is to have an IQ in the 150+. I laugh at people that say in everyday conversations that they have IQs of 165 and so forth. Hell, there's a certain female liberal poster whom I won't mention that claimed she had a 150+ IQ (same poster who has something to say in almost every thread).

There are a lot of tests out there which purport to give you an IQ score. Most are bullshit -- after all, they don't sell their product by telling you that your score is LOWER than you'd like do they?

Am I the "certain female liberal poster?" I'm the only female regular her on SC, so I'm assuming you're trying to make me look like an idiotic braggart. I can look like an idiot on my own, but I'll just bet there was a context in there if you're remembering a post somewhere -- context matters. Really.

I have taken a test on the web that said my score was above 140 or 150, so it must be true :S:):S:). I joke about it sometimes, along with saying I'm a rocket scientist (I do work for NASA, on the space shuttle's computers).

My father says I'm beautiful, too. Of course, he's legally blind, but I don't care :)
